Can't pair wireless wheel

I can't pair my MS wireless wheel to my 360S console. I push the sync button on the console and the lights on the console flash in a circle as expected, but when I push the sync button on the wheel, the lights on the Guide button on the wheel do not light at all. If I push the Guide or Start button on the wheel, the wheel vibrates briefly about twice a second until I release the button. I don't think it can be a wireless interference problem because a) I've tried with the wheel about two feet away from the console with the same results and b) my regular controller resyncs without trouble. I'm using AC power for the wheel. Anything else I can try?

Turns out the batteries were dead. Even though I had the wheel plugged in, dead batteries prevented it from pairing with the console. I removed the batteries -- didn't even replace them, just took them out -- and it paired without trouble.
