Can't log in to Xbox Live account on Xbox console

I'm a newbie for xbox related issues.  I have an xbox live account I created online with my live.com email address.  I'm trying to connect my xbox console to this xbox live account. (I've never logged in via the console before to any xbox live account).  The console only goes out and downloads updates so I know the internet connection works.  When I input my email address and password in the console received the following error:

" This Microsoft account is associated with a different xbox live profile. Please log in with a different profile. "

This is of no help and I don't know what to do.  I want to buy points, buy a gold subscription but if I can't log the console in to a live account that would be of little value to me.  What do I need to do to log my console into my xbox live account????

Hi,

You're getting this error because you are trying to make a new account, not download the account you have previously made.

You will need to go to your Xbox 360 Dashboard, push the middle button on your Xbox 360 controller, find the download profile option and enter in the e-mail and password that you are using to log into xbox.com in that location. It will start to download the profile.

If you do not see the download profile option, press x to sign out of the current account you're logged into.

See how that works out for you.

Thank you.  I didn't realize that local and online profiles were treated differently.  I'm up and running.

Hello. My brother can't connect to Xbox live on his account. He can sign in, but he can't accept the new update. When an update came for the terms of use, he accidentally declined it, without reading it. Now he cannot install the update, or sign in to xbox live at all. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Try to accept the terms online, then delete the profile (profile only) and re-download the profile?
