CAN I UPDATE MY OLD XBOX 360?

I still have my original 360 console made in 2005, and I heard that it might die if I try to do a console update?  How do I determine if that might happen to my console? Also, would my console be eligible for that console replacement program that Microsoft offered?

The only way you can know for sure is if you download the update.

If your console is one of those affected by the new disc layout, they will contact you as it is something they can detect over Live.
I still have my original 360 console made in 2005, and I heard that it might die if I try to do a console update?
That's true of any console, no matter how old. Flash memory fails. Updates can be corrupted. There are many things that can go wrong.
How do I determine if that might happen to my console?
Perform the update.
Also, would my console be eligible for that console replacement program that Microsoft offered?
The replacement program was for consoles that were affected by a previous update, not the update that introduced the new disc format. Microsoft proactively reached out to those who had consoles in use with Live. You can try calling Support and providing them your console serial number and console ID. They may be able to check if you were affected, though the number of affected consoles is small.
