Anyone here know what error code '80070642' means ?

Hi all,

I recently got a new Windows 8 PC and rushed to install GTA 4 as I finally have a machine powerful enough to run it with some decent settings.

I negotiated the compatability issue with relative ease, GFWL is not proving quite so easy; after I installed the game & entered my GFWL profile details it informed me that there was an update for GFWL and if I didn't accept it it would sign me out. You can't save the game if you're not signed in so this is kind of necessary.

It then failed to install the update and crashed the game. The install log gives this:

Error installing MSI at C:\Users\Eliot\AppData\Local\Microsoft\XLive\Updates\5454083b\Content\TitleUpdate.msi HR:0x80070642

So I came on here and searched the error code DB for a resolution - but this code does not appear on the database ... or anywhere on the forums ... or indeed mentioned anywhere on this site, for that matter. Do I win a prize ? More importantly, how do I get round it (I've tried 'turn it off & on again BTW 0 had the same issue 3 times now; so its a repeatable error).

Any assistance much appreciated.

Hey, eflackhill!

Did a bit of digging for the update you mentioned, and found a manual download for GFWL setup. It's called "gfwlivesetup.exe", so that sounds like the GFWL application for Windows LIVE. It's from the official publisher of GTA, Rockstar - perhaps installing this again will solve any errors.

Try installing it that way - and see if you get anywhere. Remember that once you've installed the update, open GTA again, and try to re-install the TitleUpdate.msi that failed last time.
