A few problems please help

Ok so my dad just got a new xbox, I suspect its his internet connection? first problem we couldn't connect to live because of DNS issues, got those solved cleared system cache and got connected to live.  Then we could not download the update said it was currently unavailabe, took his xbox to my house and got it to download fine, (he uses hughes net i'm on dsl) we brought it back to his house connected fine to xbox live through his wireless, (their computer streams video and stuff fine seems to be a good connection) tried to "redeem code" for gold membership says its unavailable status code 80072746, we hooked an ether cable directly to the router and the modem same status code, tried to download my profile to his console started download then gave the same status code, we cleared cache restarted console, cleared marketplace info and reset again, still the same set DNS manual to primary and secondary, connected to xbox live still cannot redeem code or download profile same status code.  Also his xbox will not read discs some it reads ok and some it won,t my xbox will read all of the same discs no problem, and his xbox will just freeze out of nowhere during game play, this has happened 8-10 times in the 5 days that he has owned the xbox, none of the freezing has happened during online play since we can't redeem the gold code, please we are gettin frustrated we need help, im going to bring my xbox over to his house and see if it will work or if its his connection? any other suggestions would be helpful  THANKS!!

It seems you have tried a few of the steps listed, but maybe you should open your net work ports. I will copy what that link says below:

Status code: 80072746

This error occurs if Xbox LIVE Marketplace is undergoing system maintenance, if temporary files on your Xbox 360 console are corrupted, or if you need to open network ports.

To fix this problem, try the following solutions:

Solution 1: Try again later

Xbox LIVE Marketplace might be unavailable due to system maintenance. Check the Xbox LIVE status. If there is an Xbox LIVE service alert, wait, and then try again later.

If there are no Xbox LIVE service alerts, try the next solution.

Solution 2: Clear your system cache

The system cache contains temporary files that are used by the Xbox 360 console. Clearing the system cache may fix this problem. Follow these steps:

  1. Clear your Xbox 360 system cache
  2. Restart your console.
  3. Try to access Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

If you still get status code 80072746, try the next solution.

Solution 3: Clear your Marketplace system cache

The Xbox 360 console also stores temporary files for Xbox LIVE Marketplace. Clearing the Marketplace cache may fix this problem. Follow these steps:

  1. On your console, go to Settings, and then select System.
  2. Select Storage, and then select your primary storage device.
  3. Select System Items.
  4. Select Marketplace System Data.
  5. Select Delete.
  6. Restart your console.
  7. Try to access Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

If you still get status code 80072746, try the next solution.

Solution 4: Open network ports

If you have a firewall or are connected to a network through your workplace or school, you might need to open network ports in order for your Xbox 360 console to communicate with Xbox LIVE. See Network ports used by Xbox LIVE  for help with opening network ports.
