XBOX Wireless adapter for windows

Hello,

I am not sure if this is the right place to write my issues because it is for the xbox one controller and the wireless adapter for windows. Anyway I will explain my problems hoping to find a solution.

Before buying this wireless adapter I used my gamepad connected by bluetooth to my pc and I didn't have any kind of problems playing any game. I bought an original wireless adapter in order to have the possibility to use the voice chat while gaming when connecting a headset through the gamepad. The firmware on the controller is 5.9.2709.0 version, it does not give me any newer updates when I use the xbox accessories app.

The problems starts from the beginning when I connect the wireless adapter to my pc.

I share with you my info file of my system : https://1drv.ms/u/s!AphPGjBDsDLNr3hrNcfWefX1L_2H?e=aoNlSD

The pc didn't recognize the wireless adapter and it has been gone under device manager into other devices as XBOX ACC. I try everything in order to be recognized following all the steps shown in https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/accessories/troubleshoot-xbox-wireless-adapter-for-windows#:~:text=Try%20reinstalling%20the%20drivers%20in%20case%20they%20have%20partially%20installed.&text=On%20the%20confirmation%20window%2C%20check,on%2C%20plug%20in%20the%20adapter.

but it didn't help. Afterwards I start to read many threads on many forums and I followed a proposed solution to go on microsoft update catalog and download the microsoft driver update for xbox wireless adapter for windows version 18.31.1.43 and try to install it using the DISM command. So I opened the command prompt as administrator and i have written the command dism /online /add-package /packagepath:"file.cab" where file was the name of the downloaded cab file. It returns to me the error "The system cannot find the file specified" ( 0x80070002)....So I started to download other alternative cab files (other versions) from windows update catalog and try the dism command....no way, every times the same error. So it seems that the dism command does not work anymore with the new windows updates, could you confirm me that?

Anyway I try to extract the content of version 18.31.1.43 with zip software and install the driver from the inf file (right button of the mouse on it and clicked install), after deleting all previous automatic drivers installed and with the toggled wireless adapter from the pc. Afterwards I put the usb adapter into the pc and again the same problem. The system cannot find any driver and the wireless adapter didn't work and put it as XBOX ACC under other devices.

Finally after a lot of tries I found this youtube video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBeMry0MmKE

It is not any official solution, but I download the drivers from this youtube post and I follow the solution proposal of this guy. At least I succeeded to install the wireless adaptor on my pc.

Well, I connected the xbox one gamepad to the wireless adaptor following the official guide (without disconnecting the bluetooth). My first question is : now the gamepad is connected both on bluetooth and the wireless adapter? Or automatically when it connects to the usb dongle it disconnects automatically from the pc bluetooth? Please clarify me first this. Is it better to cancel from the pc the previous bluetooth connection and leave only the new connection with the adapter?

Anyway I start to play to my favorite game in this period and it is read dead online. It starts using the steam interface (big picture). When game starts, on the screen it shows the popup with xbox gamepad configuration loaded - profile loaded or something similar, I do not remember the right words of the message now, but it is the standard one. So I start to play the game. During the online gaming sessions, the xbox button frequently starts to blinking and lose the connection. Everytime it reconnects, it appears the steam popup that the xbox gamepad configuration was loaded and connected as before. The problem is that it takes 4-5 seconds to reconnect while the game is continuing. I didn't have this problem with bluetooth with any games.

So again it could be also a driver problems, I do not know, but I do not use this one provided from official sources, so I do not know.

I try other games : dragon ball Z fighter, mortal kombat 11 and killer instinct through the steam interface and I didn't have any connection issue.

I try also watch dogs legion using the epic launcher, again it worked without issue.

I try another rockstar games and it was GTA 5 Online, but it has been bought through the epic launcher, so it does not use steam. Very rarely the screen freezes for a couple of seconds like to put on pause, and then the game continues again....I didn't see the xbox button to blink, honestly speaking. But it never happens this while using the bluetooth connection.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello there,

This sounds like a familiar problem I had with one of my controllers a while ago. I found that the connection with the wireless adapter was much more reliable.

I recommend you have the PC forget the bluetooth connection with the controller, and have the controller depend only on the connection with the wireless adapter. When you disconnect the controller from the PC, it's possible that it will blink as though it is not connected to anything--this is okay.

Just reconnect to the wireless adapter only, without going through the bluetooth settings on your PC, by:

  1. Press and hold the connection button on your controller until the Nexus button blinks rapidly

  2. Press and hold the wireless adapter's connection button until the indicator light on it blinks rapidly

  3. Wait a few seconds for the controller and adapter to find each other, and for the blinking to slow down and stop, indicating a successful connection

Best of luck, and stay safe! If this doesn't work for you, let us know.

Hello,

until now, on my computer the bluetooth connection seemed to be more reliable in comparison to the wireless one through the microsoft adapter.

Anyway the proposed solution by you,I have already tried it without any success, unfortunatelly.

I tried to change the usb port on which the adapter was installed. The results on the mentioned played games (passing through steam) was that the mapping of the buttons have been changed. I cannot find the logic, because everytime is something different (one time it swaps two buttons, another time pressing one button it makes two actions, or pressing the left trigger, it remains pressed, etc. etc.).

I cannot understand if it is a drivers problem or some kind of conflict with the steam overlay. I make a lot of tries during the weekend.

What I have seen is that this problem mainly occures with game added to steam as non steam games or with red dead online that is a rockstar game that has been bought using the steam platform and it runs using the steam launcher.

I notice a difference in the steam popup when turning on the controller between the bluetooh and wireless connection : in the first one it is written "xbox one controller profile loaded", in the second one it is written "xbox one controller : xbox one controller profile loaded". I do not know why there is this difference and I do not know if it can help you to understand better the problem.

The problem is that sometimes this problem occures after 5 minutes, sometimes after 30 or more minutes...it is random...but after it happenes for the first time, it starts to repeat more frequently. Very strange.

Any other ideas?

Best regards,

Hmm. I have a few more questions: Does this problem only happen when you are using the controller with a game downloaded through Steam? Have you attempted loading a game that was not downloaded through Steam? Are you able to test the controller on another computer and reproduce the problem there as well?

And from what I understand, when you attempted reinstalling the controller over the weekend, you already tried the following as well before reconnecting it?

---

Uninstalling the controller from Device Manager:

  1. Head into Device Manager while the controller is on and connected

  2. Find the listing for the Xbox Peripherals > Xbox One Controller

  3. Right-click on it and select Uninstall device

Making sure it's also removed from Bluetooth:

  1. Open the Settings app

  2. Search for Bluetooth settings

  3. In the list of Bluetooth devices, locate the Xbox Wireless Controller

  4. Select Remove device

---

Hello,

I haven't made the things in the way you explained me now. I have only partially uninstalled the drivers or removed the device from the bluetooth. So now I will try to follow your procedure and then reinstall again the drivers for the Microsoft adapter and then connect the controller to it.

I cannot be sure, but I am suspecting that it happens only with games that uses the steam launcher. But in general all my games uses the steam launcher, this is the problem. Also the non steam games, I added them to the steam launcher, in order to have only one platform for everything (I am using the big picture as interface). As I have already told the problem is that sometimes this problem occurs after 5 minutes, sometimes after 30 or more minutes...it is random...and I cannot catch it. I need to play everyday for 10 or more hours to understand and be sure...this is the problems...I have to work, the gaming is for relax... :)

Yesterday I made another try, I do not know if it makes any sense. I take the extension cable of the Xbox adapter packaging and I connect it to one of my rear usb 3 ports behind the pc, and I put in the adapter. The adapter was placed again on top on my pc near to the usb port in which before it was connected. The only difference in addition to the usb port, it was the previous position of the adapter that it was vertical now it is horizontal leaning against the pc case .

I play for one hour and the gamepad disconnected only 1 time. I am far around 3 meters from the adapter, and the adapter is at a higher height in comparison to the position of the gamepad (the pc is on the top of a shelf and I am playing lying on the bed.

I am telling this because I do not know the signal strength of the adapter as well as its direction...I have no idea.

Due to the fact that I am having some problems with the HDR visualization, this morning with a game (Red dead redemption 2), I try a couple of times to pres alt+enter in order to switch to fullscreen and viceversa. Before doing that, the gamepad was working. After doing that, the button A start to not work anymore inside the game...these things are very strange...I haven't the time to restart the game and see if the problem persists because I had to go to work....

Hello,

I followed your suggestion, but unfortunatelly it doesn't help to solve the issue.

The only thing it seems that changing the usb port, the disconnection occurs less frequently, but I cannot be sure at 100%, because the problem is too random.

Do you think that if I make the upgrade to windows 11, could it improve the situation or it is better to do not risk at this point because it is not clear what kind of incompatibility could arise?

the double input issue is something I've experienced from multiple rapid button presses or holding down a button in rapid succession. try updating via a console if you have one as it might help

When the double input issue happened, it is not due to a rapid pressing of the button, probably it is an uncorrect mapping of the buttons made by steam overlay.

Unfortunatelly I do not have a console to made the update you suggest me, but I do not think that the update on the console is different from this one of the pc. Anyway the microsoft team could tell more about this update.

Hello again,

I had more time to make any tests and I try everything it was possible to try.

I contacted also the steam support which I gave them the msinfo32 file as well as some other steam configuration files. Unfortunatelly they didn't find nothing strange, in their opinion. I contacted also Rockstargames, because the involved game was developed by them. They give me also some instructions that didn't work and finally they told me to contact the microsoft support that I had already contacted before....

Anyway I probably found a workaround, now it works better, but sometimes very rarely it agains disconnects. So it is not solved at 100%.

On the top of my pc there is wifi 6 antenna...the wifi and bluetooth is turned off from the windows setting now..the usb ports are around 10 cm far from this antenna....is there any chance that it could also interfere with the wifi signal of the adapter if it is also turned off from windows?

Anyway what I have done is to connect to the usb port the usb cable extention of the adapter and place the adapter more distant from the pc. Doing this the problem almost stopped...I have removed the usb dongle of the keyboard to check if it was the keyboard, but it wasn't. So the only thing that remains is the metal case or something inside the case and the external wifi 6 antenna connected to the pc that could eventually interfere with the xbox adapter.

What do you think about?

At this point, you've done a great job of hounding down the problem yourself, and I celebrate that. In short, I wanted to confirm for you that yes, that will impact the signal. I didn't know this was the case before, so I'm sorry I wasn't able to suggest it earlier. Having a wifi antenna for your PC so close to the Xbox Wireless adapter can (and usually does) interfere with its operation especially when you are relying on that same wifi heavily.

Best of luck in the future. On my desktop, I have the wifi antenna sitting on top of my PC towards the back, and the Xbox wireless adapter connected to the front of my PC far away from it, and closer to me when I play games.

You wrote : "On my desktop, I have the wifi antenna sitting on top of my PC towards the back, and the Xbox wireless adapter connected to the front of my PC far away from it, and closer to me when I play games."

My case is the same for the wifi antenna but the usb ports are also on the top of my PC towards the front, so the xbox adapter was also in that usb before.

You also told me "far"...what does it mean far for you in this case? (20-30-40 cm? or more? how big is this desktop pc :) ) Or what you would like to tell me is that the adapter is connected to the usb cable extender that you bring closer to you when you play?

I would like also make you pay attention to the fact that I have explicitly told you that the antenna is turned off by windows setting.

So it could interfere also if the antenna is not turned?

Now it works and I am happy with this, but I would like to understand better for myself :)

Thank you :)
