Xbox One X won't output 1440p at 120hz

My monitor is 1440p 144hz over HDMI 2.0, however I cannot get my Xbox One X to output at 1440p 120hz.  If I override the display to HDMI, I am able to change the refresh rate to 120hz but it will automatically bump my resolution down to 1080p. If I turn the resolution back up to 1440p it bumps it back down to 60hz. I've tried disabling freesync on my monitor but that doesn't help. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi and thank you for bringing your problem to the attention of the xbox forums.

As far as im aware and i maybe wrong but i do believe it is only certain games that will upscale to the 1440p with the "x" but im sure the "x" and "s" are only capable of 120Hz at 1080p i hope maybe my link can help you.

HDMI output settings

Thank you

We need to know the make and model number of your TV.  Can you please provide this?  Thanks.

The previous comment regarding the resolution is incorrect, when the console is set to 1440P it will stay that way.  At least it will on a 60Hz refresh rate. However not all monitors are created equal and many do not have the full support of 120Hz via HDMI and will only work at this rate via Display Port - which is obviously not what the Xbox can use.

But without knowing what your monitor is, we won't be able to advise.

It is the Dell s2719dgf.

I have tried everything from checking both hdmi ports, factory resetting xbox, updated monitors firmware, ive contacted microsoft support who basically told me to post to reddit (which i have actually done multiple times and found people with the same issue). I havent contacted dell because im 95% certain the problem is the xbox.

If one device in your chain doesnt support a resolution /refresh rate you’re out of luck. Also check the quality and condition  of your cables and make sure its plugged directly into the monitor.

According to the product page, only one of the ports is HDMI 2.0, and that one may not be 100% compliant given when the monitor was manufactured. I would suggest calling Dell and/or looking for a firmware update which might increase your stability

Any and all contact outside of the forums will not be responded to.

Everything in my "chain" is compatable. My monitor is 1440p 144hz over Hdmi 2.0. I am using the cable that came with my Xbox One X which is 2.0. The problem seems to be with xbox.

Hi,

I've got some more information on your issue, unfortunately, you're not going to like it.

According to the manual, which you can download from here. This screen does not support intermediate refresh rates such as 120Hz at 1440P. As for 120Hz at 1080P, I can't explain that as this refresh is not supported either.

From the screen shot below, you can see this monitor supports 144Hz (143.9 is basically 144) on the vertical refresh rate and 155Hz via Display Port. There isn't a 120Hz option listed.

Also, you'll note in this review I found for the Dell S2719DGF, they didn't test 120Hz because it wasn't supported.

"Note that we aren’t testing other refresh rates such as 120Hz as the monitor does not include intermediate refresh rates such as this as listed resolutions."

As you can see, this isn't a console issue, it's a monitor one.

Hey man i sincerely appreciate you looking into this. I am considering getting the Acer XG270HU instead. I believe i found the manual and it looks like it would support 2560 x 1440 over DP and HDMI at 120hz and 144hz. So this one should work right? Might be a dumb question but will it also work at 1080p 60hz and 120hz and 1440p 60hz? Thanks again!

I would look into your monitor and call DELL not Microsoft. I also have a One X and have never had any problems, as soon as select 120hz it automatically drops me down from 4K to 1440p. You must be misunderstanding something about your monitor as there must be a defect of some sort or your monitor does not support 1440p at 120hz.
For reference, before responding I booted on both my One X's. One is connected to a Samsung 4K QLED and I had no problem switching from 4k 60 to 1440p 120. My other X is connected via an LG 4K monitor and again when selecting 1440p OR 120hz it automatically selects 1440p or 120hz without any issues.
