Xbox Beta App for PC

Hello,

I just received a 3-month trial of Xbox Game Pass for the PC.  With that I needed to download and install the Xbox (Beta) app (found here: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-app).

The install seems to go fine but when I attempt to launch I constantly get an error that lists the app location - i.e. C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.GamingApp_1910.1001.7.0_x64_8wekyb3d8bbwe\app\Xbox... (the rest is cut off) and it just says "The parameter is incorrect."

I searched the net and found similar errors when Windows Store apps are not working and they suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the app, of which I've done twice and I still get the same error and cannot launch the app.  I have no problems with any other Windows App, I just spent 45 minutes going through and checking every single program I have - they all work except the Xbox Beta app.  I have the correct version of Windows.

How can I resolve this issue, is this a bug with the current version?  Reinstalling Windows for what is clearly a problem with this one app is not an option.

Thanks!

Hi there Powell,

Thanks for reaching out here in Xbox Forums. I understand there is an issue with the Xbox Beta App on PC. I recommend checking out the following article for more troubleshooting information: Windows 10 Xbox (Beta) App FAQ.

If the issue persists, we recommend:

  • Please use the built-in feedback tool within the Xbox app to help us better understand the issue you are facing. Just click on your profile photo and select “Feedback” from the dropdown menu to open Feedback Hub. Feedback Hub enables you to provide feedback about Windows and apps by sharing your suggestions or problems.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for being a part of the Xbox Family.

Thank you for the reply - I looked through the FAQ and don't immediately see a resolution for my problem.  The troubleshooting advises to either ensure you are on the correct version - Windows 10 v.1901, or to uninstall/reinstall or repair the app, of which I've done and still receive the error/app crash when trying to launch.

Which brings me to your next comment, to use the Feedback tool within the app.  I cannot do that as the problem is the app won't launch.

I've done more investigation and checking the Windows Event Viewer I can see that despite the install program appearing to complete properly - I am seeing an 'Unexpected exception' crash for the Installation program.  I'd like to report this properly as I feel this is a bug and not a problem on my PC, but as I said - I cannot find a proper place to report as I can't use the app itself to report the problem.

After reinstalling the app, did you restart your computer?

Hi Powel145,

sorry to hear. But in your case "The parameter is incorrect" you should please first de-install XBOX (Beta) and then check your system files!

Windows provides its own tool, System File Checker (SFC), for this purpose, which you can run from the command prompt if you have administrator privileges. The application checks all system files and then immediately starts an attempt to repair found bad files. In any case, SFC records all the results so that you can alternatively replace the damaged data yourself. To use the scan program,:

Open the command prompt as an administrator:

  1. Go to Windows Search from the Start menu (Windows icon).
  2. Type "cmd" and then right-click on the entry "Prompt".
  3. Select the "Run as Administrator" menu item.
  4. Now insert the following command line into the command line: sfc /scannow
  5. Confirm your entry by pressing Enter to start the verification process. Leave the command prompt window open until the check is complete and SFC has notified you of the results.

Then reboot your System.

Then please  download and Try "AppsServicesTroubleshooter" to repair with the Store related services.

Then reboot your System.

Make sure Windows has the latest update: Select check for updates now, and then select Check for updates.  Or, select the Start button, then select Settings/Update & Security/Windows Update/Check for Updates. If there is an available update, select Install now.

Check also if there are Updates pending in the Store APP: Select the Start button, and then from the apps list, select Microsoft Store. In Microsoft Store, select See more/Downloads and updates/Get updates.

If this is all fine (I know it is borring but) reboot your System and after this you can try it again to install the XBOX (beta)

Hope this helps and please keep us informed
