[TROUBLESHOOTING] How do I know if I have hard drive failure or a video output failure on my XBOX One X?

Hey all,

Yesterday, I experienced the black screen of death on my XBOX One X. Afterwards going through the troubleshooting steps, I was pretty sure that it was the HDMI issue that was plaguing me.

When I power on my XBX1X, I get a momentary black screen and then no output (no video signal). My unit stays powered, and no matter what I do, I can't get any output to my TV. Like I said, I tried all the basic troubleshooting steps with no luck.

I also found out last night that a complete hard drive failure could mimic the black screen of death issue (or so I'd saw on YT).

My question, how can I tell which is one it is? What should I see when my hard drive is completely dead and not bootable? Should any error be outputted on the screen?

The reason I'm questioning if it is just a video output issue, is that I can't use the XBOX companion app. I can't connect to my XBX1X from my Windows PC nor is the unit even pulling an IP address.

I have an appointment today at a MS store. I was informed that the cost of a refurb will be $249 (Target this week has a brand new XBX1X for $349 -- Hmm).

But if what I am experiencing is just a hard drive failure, I would replace it myself.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

It is not advisable to replace any part of your console yourself as it goes against the Code of Conduct. Best is to use an Microsoft authorized repair centre.

Have you replaced the HDMI cable with a new one to see if the problem is the cable itself?

The easier step would be to diagnose the video issues.  HDD issues can be tricky and even sometimes, intermittent.

So, you can start your console in "Low resolution mode".  This will do a basic output, so if your HDMI or video settings are weird and causing issues displaying, should still show on a display.  You get there by ejecting any disc in the drive, if there is one in there, press and hold the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds until it powers fully down.  Then press and hold the Xbox button on the console AND the eject button at the same time until you hear a "Beep" and the console turns on.  This will output a display of 640x480 in size and present some settings so you can troubleshoot the display.

Additionally you could diagnose video issues by replacing, ONE AT A TIME, the components: HDMI cable, display, video settings (display resolution), testing another device that you know can show video on that HDMI input for the monitor.

But if you can't stream via the console via xCloud preview Console Streaming, Xbox Console Companion streaming, etc, then it's likely a different issue than display (or video processing) we would need to troubleshoot.

Let us know how that goes and we can try to narrow it down from there.

Yep. Already tried the low resolution output. Did not resolve the issue.  Also tried swapping HDMI cables, inputs sources, and even a different TV.  My other devices work without issue across each of those options. I'm pretty confident that it is a XBOX One X only issue at this point.

Yeah, sounds like it would be a hardware issue.  I'd recommend looking at your options for a service repair at Microsoft Device Support site here. I've had good luck with them servicing my Surface devices when I've needed to.

Just came back from the MS Store. They couldn't get a display to work. I figured they would have some tools at their disposal that could diagnose the specific error. They did not. They only used the same tools that they list online. They only offer a refurb XBOX One X for $249.99 a 90 day warranty. I chose a new XBOX One X for $349 with a one year warranty and a free digital game (I chose Madden 20).
