My Original Xbox console is no longer reading DVD game discs

Hi there

My original console from way back in 2002, or thereabouts, is reading CD audio discs perfectly but not even recognising game discs. It's been in storage up in my loft space for a few years and I've dug it out as part of a clear-out. I wanted to see if I could have some fun with it with my 9 year old boy but.....no joy so far. If I need to replace the drive, how hard is that and would I need a particular type? Is there anything else I can do to try and resurrect whatever might be faulty with the drive? Thanks ;-)

Hey DaveFell1,

After 18 years, she had a good life!

Unfortunately, a faulty drive on an Xbox Original may be difficult to repair. I think you can find replacements, but they may be more expensive than a used Xbox Original ;-)

Nevertheless, if you feel like it, there are several replacement tutorials available on YouTube I think!

Nostalgic.

Maube you can watch some YouTube tutorials and find the disc lector in some third party stores.

Good luck.

Hi there

Thanks. I've been thinking the same thing but don't know for sure whether replacements would still be available, or for how much. A replacement machine is clearly another option and I could possibly swap the drive in to mine

I was wondering whether anyone out there had personal experience of either option and might know better then me ;-)

Hi there

Yeah. I've already clocked some YT videos - can't see that replacing the drive would be terribly difficult, but how easy are they to get hold of and where from?

Cheers :-)

Unfortunately I don't have any experience on the classic, and it's not allowed to give any explanation on this kind of repair on this forum ;-)
But on Reddit, among others, you can find people with whom you can share this kind of information and who can help you more precisely !

I had this issue with Xbox 360 and Xbox One drives, and this might help. I know with mine it was due to dust from living in an apartment by the beach so it was dust, but I was able to buy one of the DVD / Blu Ray laser lens cleaners and with a little effort was able to get the drive back up and running. This option will only work if its not the motor that burned out, but since those cleaners only cost a few bucks online that might be a good starting place to try.
