Mortal Kombat X: Problem playing against friend

I have recently run into an issue when inviting my friend to play Mortal Kombat X (private match, ranked match, room challenge, KOTH,...anything!). We will get each other's game invites or challenges, then immediately it will say that the "game session is not available" or "challenge declined". We have no trouble finding matches with random people, but when we invite or challenge each other, it craps out. It won't even allow us to be in the same KOTH (King of the Hill) match together! Is there anything that would cause this?

We have absolutely no trouble partying up and joining each other's game in Halo MCC matchmaking - this is why I'm led to believe the problem lies with MKX. I have searched all over forums for an answer to this, but I guess it isn't a very common problem. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
