Latest firmware update for Xbox controllers broken?

I wanted to share something about the recent firmware update for Xbox controllers. I don’t know if it’s just on my end, but once downloaded it’s re centering the analog sticks on their own when making micro adjustments. If you move the stick a few % in any direction a lot of the time it will snap back to the centre and say 0% then continue to move again with your input. Making tiny micro adjustments impossible for people on low dead zones. Have tested this in multiple games and it’s reflecting what’s being shown in the controller tester app. I bought a new elite series 2 thinking my old controller was broken, once I updated it I’m having the exact same issue as my old standard controller which makes me think it’s the firmware update not working properly. I don’t know if this is already a known issue or not and can’t find much online about it.

Thought I’d share this incase anybody has updated their controller recently and felt the analog sticks were off. Check them in the controller tester app with small movements and see if it’s snapping back to the centre on its own.

Thanks!

Hi,I MattYbz I

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are having problems with your Xbox's controller after updating the firmware.

My friend, thank you for everything you've shared and for the testing you've done, which lets us know right away that this issue is something that only occurs after a firmware update.

I would like to know what device you are using? And are you using Bluetooth to connect your device?

The latest Xbox controller firmware update may affect Bluetooth connectivity and performance on some older, non-Xbox devices. If the controller encounters Bluetooth-related issues after a firmware update, there is an option to restore the controller to an earlier firmware version to correct the issue.

You can check this link to do so:

My Xbox controller has connection issues after the last update | Xbox Support

We look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

The issue initially occurred on my standard Xbox series controller that is 3 months old. I thought it was a mechanical issue so bought a brand new elite series 2 controller. When I connected it to my Xbox I was prompted to update the controller so I did. I went into controller tester and found the exact same issue I had previously with the analog sticks snapping back to 0% when small inputs are made, making them inconsistent. Both controllers were connected with a usb c cable.

I am certain the update is what’s causing this after testing other controllers including 3rd party ones.

Lastly I noticed on other websites people are having the same issue with micro adjustments since the firmware 5.23.5.0 update. It would be great if this could be looked into further

Thank you

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply and the details you provided! What you've shared will definitely help users who are experiencing similar issues as you are and make them aware of why the problem is happening.

However, since we are not the Xbox development team and therefore cannot document your situation directly, I would recommend that you direct your feedback to the Xbox team via the method in the link below:

Found a post on Reddit, tried to help and found your post. I'm having the exact problem as you, down to getting a brand new Elite Series 2 just a week ago. After a discussion with Copilot, I think I have a fix. Can't get on just yet to test but I hope this helps! I asked about rolling back the update, here is the answer:

Yes, it is possible to roll back updates on Xbox controllers. If you're experiencing issues after a recent firmware update, you can revert your Xbox controller to an earlier firmware version. Here are the steps to do it:

### On a Windows PC:

1. Ensure your Xbox controller is connected to your PC.

2. Install the Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store if you don't have it already.

3. Open the Xbox Accessories app.

4. Connect your Xbox controller to your PC using a USB cable.

5. In the app, select your controller, and you should see an option to revert the firmware update.

### On an Xbox Console:

1. Press the Xbox button to open the Guide.

2. Go to Profile & System > Xbox Assist.

3. Navigate to Get Help > Help topics > Console & accessories > Controller.

4. Select "My controller has connection issues after the last update."

5. Follow the prompts to check the controller firmware and revert to a previous version.

Keep in mind that the option to revert the firmware may not be available for some older model controllers[](https://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-rollback-xbox-controller-firmware-update "1")[](https://howtoedge.com/rollback-xbox-controller-firmware-update/ "2")[](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/xbox/forum/all/revertrollbackdowngrade-xbox-controller-firmware/25f07169-3244-4fe0-838c-949951b7c109 "3").

If you need more detailed instructions, you can find them [here](https://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-rollback-xbox-controller-firmware-update).

Is there anything else I can help you with?

Thank you so much for making this post. I am having an issue after updating my Xbox controller to the latest update also, after updating to the latest firmware version my left thumb stick does not move forward my character on any games. I called Xbox support and they asked me to send it back for a repair or replacement via ups delivery service since its a brand new controller. I then used my spare controller and thought ill just update it to see if it happens on this, it did! Same issue not moving forward. So that also got sent back today via ups, to top it off i then asked my 5 year Old son if i could use his controller when he is not playing on his Xbox, he said yes daddy no problem, i had absolutely no intention of updating his controller to the latest update! His controller worked, so I'm using it playing halo master chief collection and i just randomly could not move forward, i thought how can this be? I haven't got the latest update on my sons controller, so i checked the firmware via Xbox accessories app on Xbox...it updated my sons controller to the latest broken firmware!!! I called my girlfriend in and explained the situation and we argued, i said i didn't update it this time i swear! What's also strange is that there is nobody talking about this latest firmware issue on google or YouTube, this post is all i could find so again thank you for making it! One last thing before I am done is that you read everywhere that you can revert the Xbox controllers firmware...you cannot! At least when you have the latest firmware on your controller, when you try to revert the firmware it simply says sorry this controllers firmware cannot be reverted. Anyone reading this please update your controller to the latest firmware and then try to revert it.. Its not possible. And reverting firmware via the Xbox accessories app no longer shows and hasn't to the best of my memory for at least 3 or 4 years. So people that comment such things on posts like this either do not game very often, googled the "solution" or have no clue. I'm telling everyone right here right now that reverting firmware is no longer possible on the Xbox. If you think otherwise try it, record it and post it here. Very angry sorry for rant but i have lost hundreds of pounds because of this update. And i believe posts are being hidden by Microsoft so people think they have broken controllers and then go spend on new controllers! your controller isn't broken!the firmware is! Its a business strategy to make more money!!! That is the only reason if they were being honest that they introduced firmware updates to their controllers! IF YOU ARE READING THIS XBOX /MICROSOFT PATCH THIS ISSUE WITHOUT DELAY! Nothing but money oriented! Firmware version 5.23.5.0. gareth, 38, uk, Xbox series x. Gamertag: Yttriunnn

Maybe it's locked in the UK, but in US we were able to revert the update yesterday when I posted the solution. Someone had a thread going on Reddit so I worked with another person, but as my post stated it might not work on older controllers.

We tried and were successful using the controllers that came with the Series X/S and the Elite Series 2.

One person stated that it wasn't successful on Xbox, but they were able to do it through the PC steps, the other through Xbox accessories app.

I do recall someone stating they had to hit a report a problem option, a drop down to select latest firmware update, then there was an option to roll it back.

I hope it helps bro, but to say "people who say you can don't game often, or have no clue," isn't factual. Maybe it's a regional problem, maybe it's a older controller problem, maybe it's a user problem. I can say it worked for my group and 3 of my controllers.

I simply do not believe you and suspect you work on behalf of Microsoft in customer relations. As i said in my first post, if you believe you can revert it prove it and upload the video (you can always revert back) nothing to lose have you! You upload a video and ill subsequently upload videos of pages not loading that pertain to Xbox controllers and broken firmware. Lets not just talk back and forth, do as i suggested and prove it, and again ill show you that pages do not open up on the topic! ill wait for the video not interested in words. (latest controllers bought from Amazon 2 weeks ago) edit: I have also just used a vpn to change my location to the usa, does not work! And yes im angry and on the offensive because these controllers are £50 each in the uk and the latest firmware has ruined 4 of mine. that is a £200/$251.90 loss in the last 40 hours. You bet im angry

Thanks everyone for the replies I’m glad it’s not just me having this problem… its super hard to be competitive since this update, especially on cross play games! I understand they don’t want controllers to have drift it’s a good idea in theory. Just not going to suit people who are used to having really responsive thumbsticks/low dead zones. Maybe if it was an option you could enable and disable to suit each person individually?

Hopefully we hear something soon about this.
