Internal Wireless-N Xbox 360 S capped at 11Mbps?

What is the top speed of the internal wireless card?

I doubt many folks use the Windows Media Center extender as I do, but streaming hi-def requires a fair amount of bandwidth.  I have a DLINK DIR-827 capable of 300Mbps on both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz spectrum.  It reports actual Mbps connection rate and signal strength through it's browser interface.  It shows 11 Mbps and 96% on the 2.4 Ghz band for the xbox internal card.  To validate these numbers, I used the network tuner in windows media center and pegged the graph at about the 3rd line up.

First off, this is a pretty technical question, but I have a feeling I already know the sad answer.  I've been searching for the hardware specifications of the internal Xbox 360 S Wireless card.  The best I can find is wikipedia which says only that it is "Wireless N" and operates only on the 2.4Ghz band.  Calling up tech support doesn't give any more info.

Hypothesis:  Microsoft elected to fabricate the cheapest internal wireless N card they could find and strapped a wireless n radio onto a cheap 11Mbps chip.

Wishful Thinking: I'm hoping the cap is actually higher and that my router is just dumbing down the connection due to a configuration mismatch.  I've tried open security, changing channels and moving the xbox 2 feet away from the router.  There are significant "advanced" settings I can use and the Firmware is still new so there may be a  few bugs left.  (1.02).  Anyone have any connection ideas?  I know the easy answer is to buy an external card or hard wire.

[/quote]I did some research, but could only find what you already mentioned. As far as improving your Xbox LIVE connection, I would suggest visiting this page for recommendations.

Thanks for the recommendations.  Already placed it 2 feet away from the router and got the same thing.  All other devices in the house connect at over 100, 5ghz stuff goes up to the 250ies

OK... so I troubleshot with an old DIR 655 router and got 39 mbps right next to the 360 with a 92% signal.  I took the 655 downstairs and set it up next to the DIR 827 and got the same 39 mbps with a 68% signal.  It looks as if there's some sort of compatibility issue on the DIR 827.  I'm open to recommendations, but it looks like I'll have to clear this up with DLink.

Hey SL0MAR! I would agree in suggesting you contacting your ISP for increasing your speeds!

Hi Sl0MAR.  Have you had any luck with getting more than 11mbps?  I'm having the same issue with a netgear 3700v4 router.

I have tested a Xbox Slim out on 6 different DLink routers and the following routers seem to exhibit this 11Mb connection rate on these routers in same room less that 10 feet away direct line of site using Mixed G and N or Single mode N with WPA2 and AES only and Auto 20/40Mhz settings:

DIR-857 Rev A1 and 865L Rev A1

The following routers do not exhibit this 11Mb connection rate while the Slim is connected and connect at 65Mb using Mixed G and N or Single mode N with WPA2 and AES only and Auto 20/40Mhz settings:

DGL-4500 Rev A2, DIR-645 Rev A1, DIR-655 Rev B1 and DIR-657 Rev A1

DLink suggested that disabling RTSP under Application Layer in Firewall settings and enabling WMM Enable would help however preliminary testing has suggested that it does not.

I figured that there is a possibility that there is a problem with the DLink 8 Series routers and FW however since reading this thread and seeing that other users are noticing the same problem on other non-DLink Mfr routers, that this problem could be pointing to a possible problem with the built in WiFi on the xbox Slims.

Another test I'll be running is the external USB MS xbox dual band WiFi adapter to see if this unit exhibits the same problem on the Slim. I have used this adapter on the 1st gen 360 and have not seen this 11Mb cap with this adapter.

One main difference between 8 and 6 series routers is that 8 Series are all dual band 2.4/5Ghz routers. 6 Series routers are only 2.4Ghz.

Hi there Fuuree, thanks for posting!  Definitely appreciate all the detailed info, but this thread is a little old.  Generally folks can get the best help here by posting new threads when they need it, or when responses are directed to more recent issues.
