Friends on Minecraft

I'm trying to add myself to my son's friends so he can invite me to play in his Minecraft world. I've added him and it says we're friends. He added me - it says we're friends. Then, when I go to add him into my game or he tries to add me to his, we don't come up as options of people to invite. I don't know what we're doing wrong and if I have to enter my password one more time, I'm going to scream. 
Hello, You play in realm server? or a Normal Game, maybe that are the problem if you don are member from the realm you can't join , you must be invited and you acept the solicitude in Main menu, solicitude accept.

Not realm, just a regular game. My husband is able to do it but, for some reason, it's not working for me.

Can your son see other friends to join his game? If not it could be privacy settings on his account.  The below might help

If he has a child account it could be the parent account has to allow him to become friends with you before it is finalised.

instead of using the in-game invitation option try inviting from your (his) Xbox friends list.

1 other possibility that could be preventing invitations is that on your Profile you are appearing as Offline.

it's only impossible until someone does it

For anyone else who has this issue - what ended up working for me was going through the XBox app, which I had to add to my phone. Annoying but, whatever, it worked. We are now connected and can play in the same world. Thank you for your help, everyone!

also have to make sure both accounts have xbox live if they dont already.
