Capture system is unresponsive or stuck in endless loading loop

Yesterday while playing a game I hit the ‘start recording’ button so I could capture an awesome moment in-game. Just after I hit ‘start recording’ power to my xbox was cut by accident. After turning back on my xbox and booting my game back up, the capture system was broken. Now whenever I go to hit record or try to capture a screenshot(via controller button does nothing) through the menu, instead of making a screenshot, it tries to open a menu of recent captures that never loads(been sitting here for 45 minutes now and it’s still “loading”).

The only fix I have found is to shutdown my xbox and unplug my console long enough for any residual power to drain. With all of the time spent to do as I have described it only allows for one to two captures to be made before previously mentioned issues reoccur. I would like to be able to capture moments in my favorite games again.

Hi Cass Haines,

Welcome to the Microsoft community!

Based on your description, I understand that the problem you are encountering is that the Xbox capture system is unresponsive or stuck in an infinite loading loop. Here are a few solutions you can try:

1. Restart the console: Try holding down the Xbox button for about 10 seconds until the console turns off. Then press the Xbox button again to restart.

2. Clear the cache: Unplug the power cord and wait for at least 10 seconds, then reconnect the power cord and start the console.

3. Check for system updates: Make sure your Xbox system software is up to date. You can check for updates through the Settings menu.

4. Reset capture settings: Go to Settings > Preferences > Capture and share and try resetting the capture settings.

5. Reset the console: If the above method doesn't work, you can try resetting the console but keeping your games and apps. Go to Settings > System > Console information > Reset console and select "Reset and keep my games and apps".

6. Check storage space: Make sure your Xbox has enough storage space for capture. You can check this through Settings > System > Storage.

Hopefully these suggestions will help you solve the problem so you can capture the wonderful moments in your games again! If you have additional questions or need further assistance, please feel free to let me know.

If you're still experiencing this, I've made a thread on Reddit's support sub that has been pinned; please drop a comment there to help show that this is a widespread issue.

It's been affecting hundreds of us going back since April, and we've gotten no solution after over 5 months.

After recent issues related to WiFi and Backwards compatibility were pinned on that Reddit sub, they quickly got widespread media attention and Microsoft released fixes. Given that, the moderators there are giving it a chance for our issue to get the same publicity. So please, drop a comment there so we can get as many people in one place and show this is indeed a widespread issue in need of Microsoft's attention.
