Buying a game for my son

what you are describing is for adding credit to the account.

to buy the game without the credit part

you can go trough the store app on the Xbox or directly on Xbox.com , find your game then select buy then chose (or manage) a payment methods available in your region (credit, debit, Paypal, etc...)

this way you only pay for the game/add on + applicable taxes

If you wish to buy it over the Xbox you'll have to add credit to the account, or the credit card that you wish to buy the game with

This will also work with Xbox point cards you can find at Walmart or game stop

And if you bought it on your account he should still be able to play the add on to the game, From what I've tried I had to be on the account that had the game/game add on and play it. He could be on his account just with your account logged in, in the background. I also had to do this with Xbox live 

My son thought it was an add on but it is through his forza horizon 4 game. But looks like the version you shared but for the UK. Can't seem to add a specific amount to a gift card either!
