Hello,

Does anyone know why I'm getting this message? Isnt BLACK backwards compatible with Xbox 360?

If it's backwards compatible it would only be available on the Xbox One as a backwards compatible game. Not on the 360

That game is definitely backwards compatible, but in order to run backwards compatible games on the 360 it requires an official MS hard drive. If you don't have a hard drive for your console, you would need one.

There are backwards compatible games available for the 360. Black is one of them.

For clarification: Original Xbox games on Xbox 360 require an official Xbox 360 Hard Drive be installed in the console. This hard drive contains a hidden partition that includes the emulation files needed to run the Original Xbox game. This requirement is the same if you're running one of the hundreds of OG Xbox games on disc on Xbox 360 or if you have downloaded them digitally.

On Xbox One, the back-compatibility for OG Xbox is built-in, and the games install in the same manner as Xbox 360 back-compat games (you download it from the Store, or you insert the OG Xbox game disc).

Hi Randy,

Thank you for responding. Dumb question time. Is having a hard drive installed a huge deal? Who would do this?

or

Less expensive in the long run to buy an Xbox one?

Steve

The hard drive in question is the one that most likely is already in your Xbox 360 console. The key is that it must be one produced by Microsoft; third-party drives that still fit Xbox 360 won't have the partition that has the needed emulation files.

That said, Xbox 360 has been out of production for 2 1/2 years now, so replacement parts (such as said official hard drives) may be harder to come by as time goes on. The Xbox One doesn't need anything more than what it already has, since the file that will install on your console for "Black" will already have everything it needs to run properly. So if you've already been considering an upgrade, this might be the time, especially with holiday pricing specials on new Xbox One consoles.

Incidentally, on Xbox One, the game can be installed on either the console's built-in hard drive or any compatible external hard drive that is connected to it.

Hey Burns thanks for keeping us in the loop!

We suggest looking into our Add or remove an Xbox 360 Hard Drive page since we have some very helpful information regarding the Hard drive. Now if a new hard drive is what you're looking for we suggest looking into our Where to Buy page since it addresses all our recommended retailers. Give these a look over and let us know if we can further assist in this or any other issue or inquiry!

Thanks again for being the best part of our Xbox team!

You would install the hard drive yourself. It's not a big deal. If you have one of the old fat 360s the hard drive just pops on the top. If it's a newer version there's a door on the bottom of the console that opens and you slide it in. You would just have to find a hard drive. If you buy a hard drive from somewhere like ebay, it's possible that it could be a knock off and will not work, so you would want to try to find a brand new hard drive.

It would be cheaper to buy a hard drive for the 360 than upgrading, but that's also personal opinion on if it would be better to just upgrade.

I want to thank everyone for the support and answers you've given. Looking back at my question I had a real duh moment. There's obviously no HD in my current system and I need to add one in order to play this game. The question should have been what kind of HD.

Anyhow, I have come across a few at Game Stop that say XBOX 360 500 GB Hard Drive Refurbished for $39.99. Do you think those will work or do I need to find one not refurbished?

You should contact the store and find out if it is an official (made by Microsoft) hard drive. There are third-party units out there that will fit your console, but won't have the key files to run OG Xbox games. If they know their stuff, tell them why you want to make sure it's official and they should confirm it.
