Thanks for the advise.  I did find the answer: you can only export all contacts - not any categories separately.  Of course this makes windows live mail essentially useless as contact management is non-existent.

It was the same with Outlook Express and Vista's Windows Mail.

How many years has this been a complaint. Outlook Express had the problem and re write to Live Mail still has the problem/fault. It should be a bug! Stupid and such a pain in the **** when 'upgrading' an email user to this new Live Mail software, because Outlook Express is no more.

I have to export only one category for a newsletter. Only problem is: there are more than 150 people in this category and i have over more than 500 contacts! What now windows? This is realy a major problem! I don't even get it how this is possible for such a company to make a mail program with such a major handicap!

You couldn't export groups with Outlook Express and Windows Mail. Why would you expect it now?

You didn't mention your version of Windows Live Mail, which has probably changed since this thread was started. I assume you're using WLMail 2011.

If you need only a list of names and email addresses for the category, you can get one thus:

  1. Start a new mail message (Ctrl-N)
  2. In the To... box, type the name of the category
  3. Click the '+' sign to reveal the category members
  4. Press Ctrl-A C to select All and Copy
  5. Paste into your favourite word processor and use Find and Replace to convert the list into a neat table or a list of comma-separated values.

If you need all the contact data for the members of a category, you could use vCards:

  1. Create a new temporary folder on your desktop
  2. In WLMail's Contacts window (Ctrl-3), select the category in the left-hand pane
  3. Press Ctrl-A to select All
  4. Drag the selection and drop it into the temporary folder
  5. Open the folder, select All the .vcf files
  6. Right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder .

You can now do what you need with the .zip file. Most mail clients can import .vcf files; in W7, you can import them en bloc into Windows Contacts.

I have a "workaround". I'm using the "Pager" box now for my Categories label. Pager is a useless box these days, but you can export it and if your categories are in that box you can sort and email accordingly.
