Backup/Restore RSS Feeds

Is there anyway one can backup/Restore RSS feeds from one computer to another?  This is in WLM 2012.

I have hundreds of feeds in my WLM2012 and I need to move them to another computer - Laptop so that I have access to them whenever I need to.

I didn't find the appropriate topic from this drop-down list so perhaps these forums are over-kill to a certain extent when all I want is straight answer to a straight question.

Thanks.

backup/Restore RSS feeds from one computer to another ...

That rather depends on what you want to do. If it's the feeds themselves you want to transfer (the feed for this thread, for example, looks like this:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/feed/t/82389057-13da-4ce5-ba25-fc15c2b51cb2), then you use the Export option on the File menu in Internet Explorer to create an .opml file. Windows Live Mail uses the Common Feeds List which is shared with IE and Outlook and any other program that cares to. Then use the Import function in IE on the target machine.

If it's feed items you want to transfer like this one, perhaps:

then you have a couple of choices. You can use Export email > Email messages on the File menu in the Feeds window (Alt-F E M), then select all the folders containing feed items you want to export to an empty folder on a local drive. I've never tried it, but you should be able to reverse the process on the target machine; just copy the entire folder to the target machine's desktop and Import from there.

Otherwise, you can simply select feed items in the item list and drag them to a folder on your desktop or elsewhere. Again, reverse the process at the other end. This has the advantage of using the item's subject as filename with the extension .rss.

So what you are saying is that I need to open each and every feeds one by one in IE and export them individually!!  Have I understoood you correctly?

This is definitely not an option in my case because I have said in my original post that I have hundreds.

Any other way?  Can I copy the folder from one machine and put it on another?  Have you tried it or has anybody tried it here?

What I am thinking of is would I be able to transfer everything by copying the foldre:

It looks like this with the correct USERNAME:

I guess I just have to try it to see what happens.

No, you haven't. The .opml file will incorporate the data for all your feeds, to save you subscribing to them individually on the target machine.

However, it seems that that isn't what you're trying to do, judging by what you wrote subsequently. Yes, you can just copy the Your feeds folder to the target machine, but I wouldn't advise putting it in the Windows Live Mail store folder. If you did so, this move would be opaque to the message database which could well become confused, especially if you subscribed to the same feeds on the target machine. The .rss files that Windows Live Mail saves feed items in are simple text files, but there is a preview handler that enables them to be viewed in Windows Explorer, and they are indexed by subject and date, so you can search and sort in Explorer just as easily as in Windows Live Mail.

I also had to do this, except from a backup so I couldn't use the export option anymore.

Someone else already mentioned you need to copy the 'Your Feeds' folder, but that only gives you the folder structure and all messages that you already received. The subscription isn't in there so you won't receive any messages. Here is what you need to do, just did it myself and I am very happy it worked for me.

First exit Windows Live Mail (WLM). Then copy the following from your backup or old computer to the same location on the new computer. Replace USERNAME with your own user name:

  • C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Feeds
Copy the entire folder, it contains your subscriptions
  • C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\Your Feeds
Copy the entire folder, it contains your WLM RSS folders and received messages
  • C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\RssFeeds.xml
Copy this file, not sure what it is, looks like an index of all the folders

Now start WLM again and you'll receive all messages again. I also received a lot of old and duplicate messages but at least I had my feeds back.

Next time the better option would be to make an opml export before reinstalling everything, or maybe even better bring all feeds online into feedly. Will have to do that anyway when I get Windows 8.x because that doesn't support WLM anymore and de Outlook.com app doesn't have a feeds option.

Now back to the 782 messages I just received... :/

Hope this helps

Not true. Windows Live Mail works on Windows 8+.
