Windows Live Mail no longer seems to be working.

I am aware that Live Mail is from Windows Essentials and I have used for a few years.

But it has been playing up in the last few months.

Live Mail opens but it stalls at 'checking' but no emails are collected and soon it has to be stopped.

I have heard Live Mail and some other Windows Essentials software (such MovieMaker) is being phased out.

What is the current status of Live Mail and will an announcement be made of a date when Live Mail will officially stop working?

All Windows Essentials programs are no longer supported, but they should still be working.

If you are using a Pop3 account and leaving messages on the server, that may be your issue. Logon to your mail server's website and check the Inbox there and see how full it is.

It's good to know that Windows Live Mail should work.

My server uses POP3

And I get the following message after a while:

Unable to send or receive messages for the Btinternet (gdigest) account. Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity.

Server: 'mail.btinternet.com'

Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F

Protocol: POP3

Port: 110               Secure(SSL): No

=========================

I next changed to secure (SSL) and these are the specifications:

=======================

I should mention my Live Mail Quickviews has 2093 unread emails (some quite old); all inbox 255; btinternet (gdigest) Inbox 217

These huge numbers didn't occur before.

I did go the my server's website but couldn't locate the inbox & its capacity.

See this for the updated POP3 account settings, (Not IMAP).

http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44917/~/what-are-the-settings-for-outgoing-and-incoming-bt-email-servers%3F

Also: Right click on the account name above the Inbox | Properties | Advanced. Uncheck: Leave a copy of messages on the server. Or set it to delete after X days to avoid congestion. Restart the computer when done.

Thank you so much for all the advice & instructions.

I've just seen it & have to do something else.

I'll return look at it with care & get back to you.

I do want to use Live Mail - anytime better than BT webmail.

Bruce, I think Live Mail seems to be working again.

I am still with POP3 and changed the outgoing port to 465 (I had it at 25).

I sent a message as a test and it worked - though oddly slow.

I'll next try IMAP.

But meanwhile thanks, Bruce.

BT's WebMailer is unsophisticated. For example, in composing an email, you can't drag a string of text elsewhere. You have to cut it, then paste in the new location.

Thanks again. (I must remember to restart the computer)

Eddie

Hello Bruce:

I've just checked that my email provider (BT from UK) does not support IMAP.

So I will carry on with POP3

Thought I'd let you know.

...my email provider (BT from UK) does not support IMAP.

I wonder where you got that from. It's several years since they started allowing IMAP access, probably because iPhones don't do POP3. See here: What are the settings for outgoing and incoming BT email servers?

Well, none other than BT's  CHAT assistant told me that IMAP is not supported.

So I went to my account and into Properties - Servers. I tried to type 'IMAP' over POP3. The latter wouldn't budge!

So the CHAT girl must be right.

So, Noel, you must have got it wrong. (By the way, I use a Desktop, not a mobile.)

I'd be pleased to hear your views.

I am waiting to hear from Firedog. He claims BT allows IMAP - I say not so.

As for Butch Smith, he's merely repeated my comment - I am puzzled.
