Windows movie maker not showing the videos after I open the wlmp file

Hello,

I have windows 10 running on my laptop and I was editing a very important video and I saved the project as a wlmp file.

When I re-opened the file, there was only a black screen playing with no video, no sound. This is how it looks like!

I really need my edited file back. The original videos are in the same destination and I did not delete the original videos.

What can I do to get my edited file back?

PLEASE HELP.

Thank you

There isn't much you can do because the project file (.wlmp) has become corrupted. Notice how there isn't anything in the project/storyboard area to the right.

In the future, I'd recommend saving frequently and with different names (e.g. Vlog-001, Vlog-002, ...) and that way if the last one corrupts you can go back to the one before.

Is there a way to fix the .wlmp file? I spent hours editing this video :(

If you are familiar with possible corruptions and aren't afraid of using a text editor, you could *make a copy* of the project file, open it in a text editor (like NotePad or NotePad++) and look for common problems.

The most common one that causes this is if you have some of the VideoClips with an outTime equal to 0, or otherwise smaller than the inTime. Edit all the outTime values so they are bigger than the inTime and see if you can open the clip with a storyboard that is visible. Again, only work in a copy in case you need to go back and start again with another copy of the original.

Thank you so much for the response. I have tried editing using the NotePad, however, I am having a hard time understanding what value to put in the outTime. Could you please guide me with that?

Thanks!

The inTime and the outTime represent the trim points from the start of the clip, in seconds.

For example, if you wanted the portion of the clip from 3 seconds to 7 seconds you'd have:

inTime="3" outTime="7"

But when it corrupts you get something like:

inTime="3" outTime="0"

Given that you probably don't know the exact endpoint manually, just temporarily set the outTime to a number larger than the inTime.

inTime="3" outTime="4"

That should hopefully get your project area to show again and you can fix it again the next time you open Movie Maker by opening the trim tool on that clip and setting it to where you actually wanted it to end.
