Problem Importing Outlook Express old emails (dbx files) to Windows Live Mail 2012

Hi I am trying to import old emails exported as dbx files using Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail. But I keep getting this error message " No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open".

Appreciate if you can help with this issue.

To import e-mail messages into Windows Live Mail:

  1. Open Windows Live Mail.

  2. In the upper-left corner, open the "File" menu, click "Import messages".

  3. Select an import format (from the list, select Outlook Express 6), then click "Next". This option should find .dbx files.

  4. Click "Browse", then browse to the folder in which the .dbx messages to be imported are stored.

  5. Click "Next".

  6. When you get a confirmation that the messages were successfully imported, click "Finish".

Rename your .dbx storage folder to remove the illegal characters in the folder's name then try again.

For old style software to work reliably, a folder must obey the rules. The name must contain only alphanumeric characters, ideally it should not exceed 8 characters in length, and it should not include whitespace.

If you are actually browsing to the folder containing the .dbx files, make sure the screen display is actually detecting the .dbx files before you click on the button to start the import process. If you don't see the .dbx files in the import window, they won't import when you click on 'Next.'

Make sure the pop up dialogue box is set to show all files (*.*), not just - say - text files (*.txt).
