MSN messenger account login

Hi, I have an old messenger account I would like to use again. I had to recover it as I hadn't logged into it from this computer before and now it wants me to merge it into a skype account. Is there any way to verify that my contacts are still there before I go head and merge it?
CK

Messenger was retired back in April and merged with Skype.  Unfortunately there is no way of telling until you do merge it.

If you just want to access your mail you can simply log onto http://mail.live.com and use your user name and password.

If that is all you want to do you dont have to merge with Skype

I want to access my old msn contacts. Will they still be there if I merge today, or has my account been wiped? I read something about not being able to merge more then one account with skype so assume that you can't merge more with skype either and don't want to waste my one merge on a dud.
