Can't access gmail account with Windows Live Mail 2011

I cannot get my gmail account to open anymore with WLM 2011. Using Windows 7 Home Premium. It was working fine until recently. I have multiple accounts and they all work fine. I have tried turning off the firewall and anti-virus software, but still nothing. Have checked the settings multiple times and confirmed them with Google. I entered the same account information on a different computer on my network with Windows 7 Professional and it works.  Do you know what might be causing this?

Please explain what this means. How do you 'open' you Gmail account in Windows Live Mail?

When I press the send and receive button within WLM for my Gmail account, I get a notice that the IMAP server could not connect to the internet. It suggests that I turn off my anti-virus and firewall protections and try again. That didn't work either. It gives an error code cx800ccc0e.  I've checked all the settings and the memory but no luck.

Same with me. Suddenly stopped working. I've tried changing my password (I can still access via a browser), but it did not help.

Here is the error message:

Unable to send or receive messages for the Gmail (alappel12) account. An incorrect password was entered. The next time you send or receive messages, you'll be asked to enter your user name and password for this account.

If you follow the link given, you'll find four or five steps to take to remove the hindrance that's blocking access to the POP3 server. Work through each one in turn, testing the account in Windows Live Mail after each one.

The allowing less secure applications to access the e-mail did the trick!

Thank you!

This worked for me also.

However, when did Windows Mail Live become less secure?  I have been using it for years.

Thanks,

George

... when did Windows Mail Live become less secure?

It didn't. Google started using a different authentication method to ensure that users' credentials (usernames and passwords) couldn't be accessed by a criminal hacking into a Google server. Credentials are passed securely to a different site; if they are accepted, this site passes a token to the Google server saying that the user has been authenticated. It's an analogous system to the one used at this site (Microsoft Community) - you sign in at a different site (login.live.com), which then advises answers.microsoft.com that your credentials are in order. So even if someone managed to access the many answers.microsoft.com servers, he wouldn't find any credentials to steal.

Windows Live Mail isn't an 'app' like those for Twitter or Facebook or LinkedIn that have enormous online databases that need protecting. It's a simple mail client that sets up direct communication with a mail server. You have to be authorized to access your mailbox so only you can do it, and you do this by submitting your username and password. You can't access any other part of your Google account through Windows Live Mail. It's just the same as when you access any other mailbox - at your ISP, at Outlook.com or wherever. And, to cap it all, your credentials are passed to Gmail through a TLS-secured tunnel, which is exactly the same as OAuth uses.

Just make sure that your security protocols are enabled like this at Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced:
