Snipping Tool issues in latest updates server 2022

Since the November update KB5032198 this year, we've been experiencing issues with the Snipping Tool on our 2022 servers.

The tool opens once, but afterward after closing and trying to open again, it only displays a blue circle that immediately disappears. And the snipping tool won't open anymore.

It generates the following error in the Event Viewer:

Application name with error: SnippingTool.exe, version: 10.0.20348.1906, timestamp: 0x357ae5aa

At the time, we addressed the issue by uninstalling KB5032198 and rebooting the machine. This resolved the problem, and we were optimistic that the next update would fix the issues. However, the servers recently received the update KB5033118 last week. Upon installing this update and rebooting the server, the same issues reappeared.

Our users heavily rely on these servers for Remote Desktop Services (RDS), and the Snipping Tool is an essential tool used daily.

It's worth noting that we've observed similar issues across multiple customers, each with different environments and Server 2022 machines, all experiencing problems with the updates in conjunction with the Snipping Tool.

Is this a known issue, and is there a quick fix available? Installing alternatives like Greenshot is not a viable option for us.

    Hello    Roel P.,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

From your description, it feels like the issue is necessarily related to KB5032198/KB5033118, but I searched for information and didn't see known bugs, and there was nothing related to the sniping tool in the update. Also, from your description, not all customers will have problems, so sniping tools issues could be caused by other reasons as well.

So, I suggest a few troubleshooting steps that you can try to resolve the issue:

    1. Try running the Snipping Tool as an administrator. Right-click on the Snipping Tool icon and select "Run as administrator."
    2. Try repairing the installation of the Snipping Tool. Go to "Settings" > "Apps" > "Apps & features," find the Snipping Tool in the list, click on it, and select "Advanced options." Then click on "Repair."
    3. Try resetting the Snipping Tool. Go to "Settings" > "Apps" > "Apps & features," find the Snipping Tool in the list, click on it, and select "Advanced options." Then click on "Reset."
    4. Try creating a new user account and see if the Snipping Tool works in the new account.

Also from the event log information you provided, you can see that "SnippingTool.exe application encountered an error with the ntdll.dll module on startup, and the exception code was 0xc0000409. "This can be due to some system file corruption or missing. You can try to run a system file checker (sfc /scannow) to fix any corrupted system files.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Haijian Shan

    Hello Haijian,

    Thank you for your reply!

Running as administrator doesn't change a thing.

Repairing app isn't possible on server 2022

Resetting app isn't possible on server 2022

A new profile shows the same issues.

I again want to note we have the exact same issues on about 100 Windows Server 2022 servers spreaded around multiple customers. All machines with issues are running the mentioned updates and the program works after deinstalling these updates. So there must be something in these updates which are causing these issues. It doesn't look like a corrupted file since this occurs on 100 different machines simultaneously.

    Kind regardes,

    Roel P.

    Hello  Roel P. ,

    Thank you for your reply.

Thank you for providing more information. It does seem like the issue is related to the updates KB5032198 and KB5033118. Since uninstalling these updates resolved the problem, you may want to consider keeping them uninstalled until a fix is released.

In the meantime, you can try submit feedback in Windows Server 2022 it may speed up the remediation process.

Here are the steps to submit feedback in Windows Server 2022:

    1. Open the "Feedback Hub" application in Windows Server 2022, which can be found in the Start menu.
    2. In the "Feedback Hub," select "Report a problem" or "Suggest a feature."
    3. On the "Report a problem" or "Suggest a feature" page, enter the details of your issue or suggestion, and provide relevant screenshots or log files if possible.
    4. Click the "Submit" button to send your problem or suggestion to Microsoft.

In addition, after a search.,I found out the issues with the Snipping Tool on Windows Server 2022 after installing the November updates (KB5032198 and KB5033118) are known problems. Multiple customers have reported similar issues across different environments and Server 2022 machines.

Unfortunately, there is no quick fix available at the moment.  It is recommended to monitor official Microsoft channels for updates and resolutions to this issue.

I apologize for not being able to provide a more definitive solution, but I hope this information is helpful.

    Best Regards,

    Haijian Shan

    Hello Haijian,

Again thank you for your reply.

Good to hear this is a known issue!

I can't seem to find the feedback-hub app on any Windows server 2022 we have running. I think sending an email to wufbhotservice@microsoft.com has the same effect?

Also where did you find the info about people reporting the same issues?

    Kind Regardes,

    Roel P.

    Hello  Roel P.,

    Thank you for your reply.

I apologize for the confusion.When I tried to look for the relevant information again there was no result, it may be that the relevant information has been deleted.

It's possible that sending an email to wufbhotservice@microsoft.com could have a similar effect as submitting feedback through the Feedback Hub.

AS the issue is related to the updates KB5032198 and KB5033118,you can try updating when there is a new update, maybe the problem is fixed.

Have you ever tried copying the ntdll .dll file from your pre-update system and pasting it into the updated system to see if you fix the problem?

    Best Regards,

    Haijian Shan
