April Patch KB5036899 Causing Service Startup Issues on Windows Server 2016: Error 1068

After installing the April patch KB5036899 on Windows Server 2016, several services fail to start. When attempting to start the affected services, the following error is encountered: 'Windows could not start the [Service Name] service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.' Removing the patch resolves the issue, and all services return to normal operation.

Please advise if there are known issues with the patch. If so, how can we prevent them?

Thank you

Hello  Sri_1

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

We recommend that you uninstall the patch to resolve the issue. You can also prevent the patch from being installed automatically by disabling automatic updates on your server. Once a fix is available, it will be released through Windows Update. Please keep an eye out for updates and install them as soon as they become available.

The error message 'Windows could not start the [Service Name] service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.' means that a service on your computer is not able to start because it depends on another service that is not running. To fix this issue, you can try the following steps:

1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.

2. Type "services.msc" and press Enter to open the Services window.

3. Locate the service that is causing the issue and right-click on it.

4. Click on Properties and then go to the Dependencies tab.

5. Make sure that all the services listed under "This service depends on the following system components" are running. If any of them are not running, start them by right-clicking on them and selecting Start.

6. Once all the dependencies are running, try starting the original service again.

At the moment I have not received a message that there is a known issue with KB5036899.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let us know.
