VPN no longer working after windows update (2025)

Hi

The VPN service I downloaded and paid for no longer works on my windows computer... and I KNOW that it has nothing to do with either the service provider, my internet connection or the network, because the SAME vpn service works absolutely fine on my phone, connected to the same network. The vpn worked fine on my computer until December 2024, and now it doesn't, and I believe it's something to do with Window's most recent updates. I don't know what they keep doing with these updates, but goodness me for a while my game performance went WAY down due to one previous update, and now the VPN is not working which is VERY bad for my job which requires security.

For reference, I'm running windows 11, version 24H2 on a gaming laptop, my internet connection is fine, and the VPN service is great.

Please fix this.... I just want windows to let me use the computer I bought and stop updating things if they're going to ruin the performance of my perfectly fine machine.

This is the only fix I see on the internet everywhere. It is best not to upgrade to 24H2 until a more permanent solution is found

    Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

This issue seems to be related to a specific conflict that can occur after Windows updates, particularly when it comes to network drivers or changes in security policies. Here's a step-by-step approach to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the VPN issue you're facing:

    1. Check VPN Compatibility

First, ensure that your VPN client is compatible with the current version of Windows 11 (24H2). Sometimes, updates can introduce changes that affect VPN services. If there are any known issues with your VPN provider’s client on Windows 11, check their website for updates or announcements.

    2. Reinstall VPN Client

Since the VPN works on your phone, it suggests the issue is specific to your PC. Reinstalling the VPN client can help resolve any corrupt files or configuration issues that may have resulted from the update. Uninstall it first, restart your computer, and then reinstall the latest version of the VPN client.

    3. Network Drivers Update

Updates to Windows can sometimes overwrite or cause issues with network drivers. To update or reinstall your network drivers:

Open Device Manager (press Win + X and select Device Manager).

    Expand Network adapters.

Right-click on your network device and select Update driver.

You can also uninstall the driver and then restart your computer to let Windows reinstall the driver automatically.

    4. Disable IPv6 (if necessary)

Some VPN services do not support IPv6, and Windows 11 may have made changes to its handling of IPv6. To disable IPv6:

Open Control PanelNetwork and Sharing CenterChange adapter settings.

Right-click on your active network connection and select Properties.

Uncheck the box next to Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), and then click OK.

    5. Check Firewall and Antivirus

Windows updates sometimes adjust firewall settings, which might be blocking your VPN connection. Ensure your firewall or any third-party antivirus is not interfering with your VPN:

Open Windows SecurityFirewall & Network ProtectionAllow an app through firewall.Check that your VPN is listed and allowed through the firewall.

If using third-party antivirus software, try temporarily disabling it to check if it's causing the issue.

    6. Use Network Reset

A more drastic measure would be to perform a network reset, which reinstalls network adapters and resets networking components:

    Go to SettingsNetwork & InternetStatus.

Scroll down and click Network reset.

Follow the instructions and restart your PC.

    7. Check Windows Logs for Errors

If the above steps don’t resolve the issue, check the Event Viewer for any relevant logs that might provide more information:

Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.

Look under Windows LogsApplication and System for any errors related to VPN or network connectivity.

    8. Rollback the Windows Update

If none of the above works and you suspect the issue is directly related to a recent update, you can consider rolling back to a previous version of Windows:

    Go to SettingsWindows UpdateUpdate History.

Click on Uninstall updates and look for any updates that might have caused the issue.

You can uninstall recent updates and restart your PC to check if the issue is resolved.

    Have a nice day.

    Best Regards

Multiple times the fix has been for me.

    1. Sign out of VPN.
    2. Make sure the User is not locked out. Confirm by checking BOTH Properties and the Password reset link. This has been a bug for awhile; one says it is unlocked and the other says it is locked.
    3. Go to Windows Credentials Manager.
    4. Delete any duplicates for the VPN connection
    5. Retype the password and Save.
    6. Sign into VPN and connect as usual.

Our user did not choose an optional update, this was pushed out automatically for him. We tried to roll back. Not only did this not fix the issue but cause Teams to fail along with other issues.

After going through every suggestion we found, recreating the VPN from teh ground up, disabling firewalls... The error was the same throughout all of this:

I stumbled upon a mention of the Windows Crediential Manager in an error discussion from 2017. As soon as I opened Credential Manager, I found duplicate entries for the vpn. After delteing and making sure the one I kept had the correct password I was immediately able to connect.

Whether that was the initial problem is impossible to say but it was the final fix for us.
