KB2844285 - fail to update

Windows Update says that I have no updates to install but on my update history it says that Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2844285) has failed during the automatic update. Do I need to rectify this?

Yes, you need to rectify it. Do the following...

Uninstall .NET Framework 2.0. Then download the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool
From the drop-down box, select 2.0 and clean.
Reinstall .NET Framework 2.0
Visit Windows Update or Microsoft Update and let it install the rest of the 2.0 updates including KB2844285.

Check if they install and report back.
Make an up-to-date XP CD @ http://xdot.tk/

There are no critical updates waiting to be downloaded so if I do reinstall .NET Framework 2.0 what would be the benefit?

If I'm understanding you correctly, KB2844285 must have finally installed so no need to do anything.

You can double check in add or remove programs with show updates ticked. Like this...

Instead of doing anything destructive, try downloading any update that fails directly from the MSFT site and install it:

 

KB2844285: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39538

KB2833940: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39431

 

If simply running those doesn't work, you can utilize logging options by running the exe with /? appended to the end from cmd.exe.
