Windows XP SP3 won't let me activate after HDD problem fixed

I had issues with my computer not working (rebooting constantly) which was fixed by my Dad's friend that works in IT. Unfortunately the fix seems to have undone the activation of Windows (I have owned this PC since 2007) and I had 30 days to activate.

As my PC is purely for gaming I hadn't updated in a while, so needed to update to SP3 but found I couldn't via the internet as my internet seems to have stopped working (Windows won't monitor it and I can't use the Belkin software to connect either). I ordered a CD version and installed it (via an external USB drive as low and behold seems like my CD drive stopped working at some point as well, but this was before the HDD issue) and that restarted the 30 days activation. I had hoped I could have solved the internet issue before it ran out but I have not, and now I get this:

"A problem has prevented Windows from accurately checking the status of the licence for this computer. To proceed your copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft."

If I select Yes it just hangs and does nothing, if I select No it hangs for a while then brings me back to the login screen. I guess the problem it's talking about is not having a net connection.

I read about the ie6/7 issue that people came across and tried installing ie8 whilst I still had access to my desktop but no joys. Also, whenever I clicked on the little icon (set of keys) that would pop up in the taskbar along with a message saying how many days I had left, I got no window appearing with either the net or phone option to activate windows.

Here is the MGADiag report I got when I ran it in Safe Mode:

Is there any way of getting a) access to the desktop again and b) getting the Activation Window to open so I can get the codes to activate over the phone? My PC is out of warranty so I doubt the company that built my PC would assist me (even if the OS is an OEM version).

edit: Forgot to mention (there was a lot to get down!) I have used the "rundll32...." command line/code in Safe Mode via Run to restart the 30-day activation period twice before whilst I was trying to sort out the internet issue. It was using it the second time that gave me that above 'error' message from Windows - it doesn't work anymore. Even when it did work I still couldn't bring up the Activation Window, via the taskbar message or the option via Start -> All Programs -> Accessories.

All I can suggest is attempting to use the Product Key Update Tool to try and force the acceptance of the Key.....

Use the Product Key Update Tool - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/help/genuine/product-key to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker, then post a new MGADiag report so we can confirm that everything went OK

Would it still work without being able to access the internet? I just had a read through and it mentioned that the tool would send Microsoft information to validate my product key, but as I said above my PC doesn't have internet access (I'm thinking something in the fix corrupted the Wireless Zero Configuration software as it doesn't monitor it etc).

Also, I don't have access to the normal desktop and from all the other help threads I've seen about this sort of issue they say Windows cannot be activated/validated in Safe Mode.

No - the tool uses data from the internet to check the validity of the current install.

Since you appear to be having a number of other problems, perhaps a general checkup would be a good idea....

Open a COmmand Prompt window, and run the following command....

CHKDSK  C:  /R

you will be told that the disk is locked and asked if you want to run on a reboot  - answer Yes.

reboot, and wait (it could take a long time, depending on the size of your C: partition)

once complete, the machine will probably reboot at least once.

Once finished, find your Windows CD, and slip it in the CD drive.

now run the following command

SFC /SCANNOW

 - accept the prompts, and if asked, point the tool at the CD drive.

Wait for it to finish, and then reboot.

Then try activation by telephone.

I did the Chkdsk scan and it found nothing, except now when I try to get into Safe Mode, after I select which OS (Windows XP Home) it hangs after loading drivers at the following:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\JGOGO.sys

I can hear that the HDD is actively doing something but not sure what if it's not moving forward. Seems like my problem has gotten worse!

The only two options I would have (as I cannot do anything with the CD) would be fiddling with cables for the HDD's connection to the motherboard OR as the last post mentions, changing the ACPI APIC Support from Disabled to Enabled.

The second option doesn't apply as it was already set to Enabled. I also don't feel comfortable fiddling with cables and I don't understand why now it is having problems when I have never experienced it hanging before.

I'm beginning to think this is a lost cause and the easiest solution is just to save up for a new PC (if and when I find a job xD).

has a couple of ideas - renaming the jgogo.sys file from a Linux boot CD being one of them.

Update:

Well I tried switching the ACPI APIC Support between Enabled and Disabled and then back to Enabled to see if that did anything and even though it did hang on that same .sys file it loaded in Safe Mode.

I tried doing that SFC /SCANNOW command in Run and a Command Prompt window flashed up for a few seconds. So I then opened a new Command Prompt window and entered it again and got this:

Windows File Protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The specific error code is 0x000006ba (The RPC server is unavailable).

Interesting

Please check the RPCSS service.

in a Command Prompt window, run the following commands

NET START RPCSS

SC QC RPCSS

SC QUERYEX RPCSS

copy and paste the results to your response.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Windows, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
2) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

SInce you can now apparently get into Safe Mode, try renaming jgogo.sys to jgogo.old and then rebooting.
