XP Registry File Failure error on Start-up

Had a power failure a few nights ago. After power returned, computer with XP Pro would begin to start, but after the Windows XP logo the blue screen appeared with the message:

STOP: C00000218{Registry File Failure}

The registrycannot load thehive

System Root\System32\config\SOFTWARE or itslog or alternate

Cannot start with any options (safemode, etc).

Cannot restore to any previous restore point.

BUT...if the memory dump at the blue screen is allowed to continue, the machine will reboot and will start.

Mystifying to me. Anyone have an idea how to get it back to normal? The double-boot sequence is a pain...and obviously *someting* is wrong.

TIA

Hi

If you have a Windows XP CD you can boot the PC with the CD.

Once booted press "r" to enter recovery console. Follow the instructions until you have the command prompt.

(Here is a nice document with screen shots to help you do this: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/rconsole.htm)

Type in

chkdsk c: /r

and press enter. This will check your hard drive for any errors. Once done restart the PC.

If the PC gives the same error then follow this document to recover the registry from a backup.
