running windows xp and media player 11. media player is still in the program files but it won't load up or run anymore

Was using media player for an hour then took a break for a couple of hours then tried to resume but the error message said it had to close and the web help alluded to a lack of sound card which is still there. Is it possible that a virus could do this or has the system suddenly become outdated?
