fax now does nothing but give error c:\windows\system32\WFS.exe is not a valid Win32 application

Until two days ago, I could create an Open Office document, select I want to PRINT it, select FAX, and the fax screen would open so I could continue.

Now, when I go through the PRINT and FAX steps, I get this message:  This fax cannot be sent at this time.  Please launch the Compose Form from Windows Fax & Scan and click on New Fax to attach this document to sent it out as a fax.

I could not get the Fax to open by any means, nor to see old faxes I'd saved nor my fax outgoing history.

Open Office also started acting weird, not allowing me to create or print some things.  For example, I would scan in a letter off the all-in-one printer (just like always) into the Open Office blank document I'd opened, the image would appear, and then it would refuse to save nor fax, and would close Open Office down.

When I go to Windows Fax and Scan off the Start Icon with my mouse, and click on Windows Fax and Scan, I get this message:
C:\windows\system32\WFS.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

Though I have automatic updates, yesterday I then installed Apache Open Office because it was the next update.  I also reinstalled the driver for the printer just to be safe.  I have gotten nowhere getting the fax to work.  I even tried opening an old Open Office document and selecting I want to fax it.  I get the same message:   This fax cannot be sent at this time.  Please launch the Compose Form from Windows Fax & Scan and click on New Fax to attach this document to sent it out as a fax.

When I go to Windows Fax and Scan off the Start Icon with my mouse, and click on Windows Fax and Scan, I still get this message:
C:\windows\system32\WFS.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

I also went into the Control Panel, Programs, Turn Windows Features On and Off, Print and Document Services, and made sure I had the Windows Fax and Scan turned on.

I have no idea what is going on.  Please help.

What is your XP version and Service Pack?

One of your previous threads says:

I have a Dell computer.  Windows Edition, Windows 7 Professional.

If that is the case, you need to post in the Windows 7 forums (this is the XP Forums).

The Windows 7 forums are here:
