Hi rustylargo,

-      What happens when you try to start the firewall? Do you get any error message or error code? If yes, specify the same.

-      What are the steps that you tried, which is provided by Ramesh?

-      Were you able to access the Firewall without any issues in Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 2?

Method 1: As a first try, follow the methods listed in this article:

Troubleshooting Windows Firewall settings in Windows XP Service Pack 2 for advanced users

Method 2: You may also follow this article.

Certain Administrative Templates from the Windows XP Security Guide may prevent you from starting the Windows Firewall service in Windows XP Service Pack 2

Note: The steps listed in the articles given here are applicable to Windows XP Service Pack 3 also.

on remesh's site i tried the following, nothing happened

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf

CMD /K NETSH FIREWALL RESET

this sp3 installation was straight from sp1 not sp2 and no the firewall was not working as the service pack was somehow not genuine. although it once was as it was installed when from dell. it is now genuine

in the command line it says ics does not exist as an installed service.

 incidentally i am sp3

also, as a side thought, i cannot seem to increase my font size to the degree i did with sp1, ie it increases very slightly, but the not in thickness. also, i cannot seem to change the icons with the media player ie when i auto associate vlc with a file and choose always associate this type of file with vlc, it does so but the icon remains wmplayer.

also tried your 2 methods still nothing

I have service pack 3 installed upgraded via windows update from sp2. a few (12) hours ago i contracted System Security 2012, was able to remove it but it disabled and deleted the registry key for ICS which at the same time kills Windows Firewall. I tried to reactivate windows firewall using kb920074 I have also tried http://forums.techguy.org/networking/406968-solved-windows-cannot-start-windows.html to no avail. I am at the point of reinstalling windows as suggested by KB920074 but am leary of doing so, since it will take me weeks if not years to get my system settings back to my comfort level.
