"due to an unidentified problem, windows cannot display firewall settings"

I had a virus, which I removed using microsoft security essentials. I'm running windows xp media center, sp3, and cannot send or receive e-mail in outlook, or connect to the internet using ie.  I can receive updates for all programs, and access internet using firefox.

1. Are you facing this issue after you removed the virus?

2. Do you have any other firewall or security software running on the computer?

Re-set firewall and then check for the issue.

a.            Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

b.            At the command prompt, type the following command line, and then press ENTER:

Rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf

c.            Restart Windows,

d.            Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

e.            At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

Netsh firewall reset

f.             Click Start, click Run, type firewall.cpl, and then press ENTER. In the Windows Firewall dialog box, click On (recommended), and then click OK.

 You cannot start the Windows Firewall service in Windows XP SP2:
