Cannot access System BIOS from a Windows XP Pro laptop, since it is secured by an unknown Administrator Password.

I purchased a Compaq Presario X1000 laptop from Goodwill Industries. It has Windows XP Pro installed and is secured by an unknown Administrator Password. When I try to access System BIOS at startup, it asks for the administrator password and denies access. How can I remove this password and get to the BIOS settings? Everything I have tried so far has failed. Please advise.
If you are up to it, you could open up the laptop and find the BIOS battery - I believe if you remove it for about 15 minutes, and that should reset the BIOS.
