Error code 10: 'There is a problem with IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. The device cannot start' no audio in Windows XP SP3 computer.

Original Title: No audio - Windows XP Home, SP3.

Hi,

PROBLEM:

  • Recent upgrade from Service Pack 2 to Service Pack 3
  • There is now no audio, only default Windows "beep"
  • Downloaded Microsoft Fix It specifically for audio problems (Windows Audio Playback Troubleshooter), and after scanning the computer for a few minutes this message came up:

"There is a problem with IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. The device cannot start. Attempts to repair this have failed. If the problem persists please contact your manufacturer for driver and compatibility support."

This program could not fix the problem, only suggest that there may be a problem with the audio device. The speakers we have are connected the same as they always have been, and turn on/off the same as always.

Other things to note:

In Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices:

Volume Tab: No Audio Device (so cannot change device volume or speaker settings)

Audio Tab: Sound Playback > Default Device > No Playback Devices

Hardware Tab: Only device not working properly is the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC, the Device Status being "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

The PC is a Dell - should we contact Dell Support?

Any ideas on how to sort this problem would be much appreciated.

Thankyou.

Hi, thanks for replying, in response to your questions:

  1. As far as I am aware, the only major change to the computer was the upgrade from SP2 to SP3, having checked the update history on Microsoft Update. Other updates around that time were the usual updates (security etc) that take place every month or so. There are several users of this computer, however, so I will check to see if they made any changes!
  2. The PC is a Dell Dimension 3100.

Will have a look at the link now, thank you :)

Problem is now solved, thanks to Dell Technical Support.

After downloading a program which allowed the Dell Technician to take over the computer screen for a short while, he downloaded a "K-Lite Codec Pack" and then a Sigmatel Driver. Only once the driver had been downloaded did the audio work again.

There was no way I could have sorted this myself, the above sounds simple but there were a lot of in-between steps and I wouldn't have known which programs/drivers to download.

Highly recommend that you telephone your PC manufacturer's tech team if you have the same problem!

I have deleted by mistake my IDT drivers. I've reinstalled them, but they are not working properly and I have no sound. I get the code 10 error. I'm using a HP's Q Compaq 615 with Windows Vista.

I'm desperate, being without music will drive me crazy. Thaks!
