Original Title: No audio - Windows XP Home, SP3.
- Recent upgrade from Service Pack 2 to Service Pack 3
- There is now no audio, only default Windows "beep"
- Downloaded Microsoft Fix It specifically for audio problems (Windows Audio Playback Troubleshooter), and after scanning the computer for a few minutes this message came up:
"There is a problem with IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. The device cannot start. Attempts to repair this have failed. If the problem persists please contact your manufacturer for driver and compatibility support."
This program could not fix the problem, only suggest that there may be a problem with the audio device. The speakers we have are connected the same as they always have been, and turn on/off the same as always.
Other things to note:
In Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices:
Volume Tab: No Audio Device (so cannot change device volume or speaker settings)
Audio Tab: Sound Playback > Default Device > No Playback Devices
Hardware Tab: Only device not working properly is the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC, the Device Status being "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
The PC is a Dell - should we contact Dell Support?
Any ideas on how to sort this problem would be much appreciated.
