Windows XP on my laptop won't shut down from the start menu.

It goes to the screen that says Windows shutting down but it never does.

1. Do you get any error message/code?
2. Did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue?
3. Which antivirus program is installed on the computer?
 
This issue can occur if some third party program or application is preventing the computer to shut down.
