What do the double question marks mean in a registry entry like \??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\

In my registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\eabfiltr

I see double question marks preceeding the filename in the Image Path entry:

Image Path = \??\C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\EABFiltr.sys

They appear on a number of other drivers - I've checked, some of the drivers with double question marks are signed, others are unsigned, so that doesn't seem to be it.  The drivers are present and operational in the system.  Is there something special that this signifies?  I haven't been able to find anything definitive in Google or Bing.

Answer

this says it references a temporary namespace directory created by windows on bootup, doesn't sound like a sign of trouble
