Total physical memory and Total virtual memory

Hi, When I have checked the system information of my laptop on which Windows XP SP3 installed, I found out that RAM is about:

Total physical memory: 2.048MB

Available physical memory:1.32GB

Total virtual memory:2GB

Total available memory:1.96GB

As this screen shot in Arabic shows:

I really don't know what those four memories mean. it could be highly appreciated to tell me

Physical memory is the actual RAM that is installed inyour PC it is quite fast in terms of accessing data

Virtual memory is not physical in terms that you cannot touch it or remomve it. Vitutal memory is a section of unused harddrive space that is used inplace of the faster physical memory that your PC lacks.

Since the hard drive is slower interms of accessing data compared to physical memory, your PC will see an increased in performance by adding or replacing existing physical memory with more or larger amounts ( 512MB or more)

The virtual memory allows your computer to still function , although at a slower speed when running applications that have used up all of the physical memory. Remember , before you even start a program the PC already is running the OS and other services which each allocate a chunk of physical memory for themselves. You can see exactly how much is used by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and viewing the process tab and viewing the Performance tab.

You can easily determine what memory your need to add to your PC by visiting a site like Crucial.com which can analyze your pc for the type of memory used.

If you look at the original post you can see it says Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 and it's 32 bit!

Thanks a lot all of you.

If you have a look at these two screen shoots for another laptop of mine, you will see that Total Physical Memory  is about 1GB and Total virtual memory is about 2GB. Thus, can I install  a Windows 7 based for(64/32Bit) system without problems?

or run Windows 7 upgrade advisor

Hope it helps

Thanks a lot, I am quite sure that the total phiscal memory for my laptop is about 1GB, which will not allow me to install either version of a Windows 7 for 64/32 based systems.

When I run the Windows 7 upgrage advisor on a laptop  on which a Windows xp(32Bit) is installed, I encountred an error running that file suah a message .( no found a drive with (XXXXXXXXXXX)KB free space)

I don't know what  this means, is the Windows 7 upgrage advisor not compatible with Windows xp(32bit).

When running that file on windows 7(64Bit), it run well.

My entier hard disk is about 120GB, but it's devided into three partitions, C is about 26GB and about 7Gb free space and the reset space is for the two others.

I think the space required to  be free on the disk should be about 200GB if convereted from KB into GB
