I can't download or open Word Document attachments to email. Can open pdf files. Have Windows Defender and McAfee Security System, also Registry Mechanic.

I am running Windows Defender--no spyware running, McAfee and Registry Mechanic.  This is a recent problem.  I can download programs, music, etc, just not doc. attachments.

You mean the doc attachment is being removed from the mail, or it simply wont open? with no err.msg?

I am having a similar problem, there is no error message, the "file download" box pops up but the "Getting File Information / Estimated time left / Download to / Transfer rate" are all blank after the colon. The box stays up until I click on "cancel". Word, PowerPoint are working fine and I can attach documents to emails no problem. I can open PowerPoint and PDF's fine but I can't open or save Word documents attached to emails (Gmail or Hotmail).

Any ideas????

Thanks.

What kind of file is the attachment (what are the letters in the file
name after the final dot)? If it's not a Word document (.doc, .docx,
.rtf, .txt, or something else compatible with Word) you can't open it
in Word.

If it is one of those types of files, please tell us what "can't save
or open" means. Exactly how are you trying? What happens when you try?
If you get an error message, please quote it verbatim.

It is a docx .  Is  this enough information that you need to know.  Not to good in computers when I have a problems.

There is no error message, the File "download" box pops up but the Getting File Information/Estimated time left/Downoad to.transfer rate" are all blank doesn't gie me how much time I have left to save or download.  I can't save or open a word documents attached with Yahoo.

Here is the document I'm try to open or save.  August -19-2010.docx

Does this give you enough information what is happen here?

have reset Internet Explorer with no success.

Yes. I have tried disabling my antivirus and disabling add--ons with no success.

When I try to download either .doc, .docx, or .ppt files I get a download failed error message after NORTON finishes scanning the document and says it's clean. I have to go to the task manager and end my session to get I.E. to work again. I can download .jpg and send files with no trouble. Any ideas. It started with I.E. 8.0 and I still have the same problem after upgrading to I.E. 9.0 . Any suggestions?
