Why can't Windows XP Install ANY new drivers?

Original Title: Why can't Windows XP Install ANY new drivers? .. Hardware update wizard returns with "The Hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software"

Windows XP can no longer install ANY new drivers ..

Hardware update wizard returns with "The Hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software"

This has been happening for several months and I can not install any new devices even if I use the installation disks.  When a new device is plugged in, the Hardware wizard recognizes the device but can not locate any drivers on the PC or from windows update.

I have a HP Pavilion desktop.

Hi cdh4splat,

·         Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?

·         Which drivers are you trying to install?

·         What is the model of the computer?

Follow these methods.

Method 1: Run the System File Checker (SFC) scan to fix any corrupted files. You may need Windows XP installation disc to perform the scan.

Method 2: Perform a Clean Boot to see if there is any software conflict as clean boot helps to eliminate software conflicts.

Note: After performing the troubleshooting steps in clean boot, follow Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state section from the link to return the computer to Normal startup mode.

After you used the clean boot to resolve the problem, you can follow these steps to configure Windows XP to start normally.

a)    Click Start, run.

b)    Type msconfig, and then click OK.

c)    The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.

d)    Click the General tab, click Normal Startup – load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.

e)    When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Method 3: Install the chipset drivers manually from HP website.
