Error message: "Could not cop files. Make sure the target disk is not read-only", when installing Epson Perfection V500 scanner drivers.

Original title: Problems updating scanner driver.

Problem:  I am trying to install a driver update for an Epson scanner.  I get the error message:  Could not copy files.  Make sure target disk is not read-only.

I am running Windows XP, Home Edition.  Scanner is an Epson Perfection V500 Photo.

What I have done:

  • Contacted Epson support.  They tell me that I must have admin rights.  However, I am the administrator and log on as administrator
  • I have downloaded the epson driver update, which is an executable zip file.  I right-click on the file, select Run As..., opt to run as the admin user, enter my password, and select Run.  The files are unzipped, but at some point in the installation I get the message "Could not cop files.  Make sure the target disk is not read-only.  (The target is C:\)
  • By the way, I have installed this driver successfully on my other computer, which is running Windows XP, Professional
Why won't the driver files copy?

Answer

Hi Passport35,

You may try the following steps and check if it helps.

Method 1:

You may try running the fixit from the following article and cjheck if it helps.

Diagnose and fix program installing and uninstalling problems automatically

Method 2:

If the above step fails then I would suggest that you run SFC scan on the computer which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.

a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.

b. At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

Note: The scan may take some time, so be patient. Windows will repair any corrupted or missing files that it finds. If information from the installation CD is needed to repair the problem, you may be prompted to insert your Windows XP installation disk.

Wait for the scan to complete and later check if you can install the drivers.
