black window in cockpit

i installed FSX to my pc just fine, when i went to fly i clicke on cockpit view.....i saw all the guages but the window was blacked out. when i clicked on virtual cockpit i had guages and my outside view. when i was in the cockpit view i noticed i could go to the edge of the screen and stretch out my outside view but then my guages would disapear? i hope this makes some sense....please help.
