windows xp screen needs to be adjusted size font appearance

My windows xp screen is all messed up. the screen display is too small so I have black on 1/4 of the screen my fonts are too big. I would think this would be easy to fix but when I click on Control panel and appearance nothing seems to help... any ideas?
Answer
Answer
1. Make sure your resolution is correct. The settings for this are in Control Panel>Display>Settings tab. Move the slider to the correct resolution for your monitor.

2. If the settings are already set to the correct resolution and you have a standalone monitor (not a laptop), then use the buttons on the monitor itself to adjust the screen display.
