Can I safely reinstall Windows XP system fonts?

Is it possible to reinstall some or all system fonts without having to repair or reinstall the operating system? I recently did this and don't want to have to reinstall all my applications and drivers if I can avoid it.

Try the following:

  1. Open Command Prompt and go to the i386 folder of your Windows XP CD-ROM. Using the "expand -r" command, copy all the missing .tt_ and .fo_ files to Windows folder.
  2. Using the following examples, replace E: in E:\i386\ with the drive letter for your DVD/CD; replace c:\Windows with the drive and directory of your Windows installation, and the font file name with that of the missing font which is being replaced.
  3. for .FON font files
    expand E:\i386\Sserife.fo_ C:\Windows\Fonts\Sserife.fon
  4. for ".TTF" font files:
    expand E:\i386\Arial.tt_ C:\Windows\Fonts\Arial.ttf
  5. Repeat for each missing font'
  6. Reboot the system.
