Unable to install Vista Service Pack 2 or Office 2010, "An unknown error has occurred. (Details) Error: 0x8004100a"

When trying to install it just says it was unable to and encountered an error, no codes or anything? The laptop has not had Microsoft Office before except for a 2007 powerpoint viewer which I have removed. There is an activation assistant for office 2007 but that has never been used and microsoft worsk is on the laptop. Any ideas would be appreciated?
Could it be to do with registry keys? When trying to run the fix it on office 2010 it comes up with a windows script host:
C:\Users\RAWTAL~1\AppSata\Local\Temp\Fixit\offscrub10.vbs
Line: 77
Char: 1
Error: 0x8004100A
Code: 8004100A
Source: null

You may manually remove the traces of Office from the machine and then try to install it:

Refer the article below to uninstall Office 2010 traces from the machine:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218

Note: In the article replace office 12 by Office 14 for Office 2010. Read the disclaimer before modifying the registry.

Once you remove all the traces restart the computer in Windows clean boot and install Office 2010 to check if that helps:

To start windows in clean boot refer the link below:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: In clean boot mode all the third party applications (Including your security software) will be disabled. Starting your computer without security software may put your computer at risk. After you have finished troubleshooting in clean boot, ensure you restart the computer in normal mode.

HI Thanks for the reply but I think there is a deeper issue, sorry if this is not the right place to post this issue but I have tried to update to Service Pack 2 but that says "An unknown error has occurred. (Details) Error: 0x8004100a" Which is the same error as when I try to run the fix it for office 2012 as mentioned previously.

In the help topics for that I have tried to update using the stand alone updater which finds an update (KB947821) which initialises but then goes to installing and nothing happens, when I try to cancel the update it hangs on "cancelling updates" and i have to close it down with Task Manager.

After reading the support topics I have run the the system file checker which says it finds the following problems in the sfcdetails.txt file (support.microsoft.com/kb/929833):

If anyone has any idea about this it would be greatly appreciated, I was given the laptop so I am not sure if i will be able to get the original vista installation disk but would that be my option or is there a fix for this?

Thanks for your feedback.

You need to cure the update issue before trying to install Office

After which you would need to uninstall any activation assistant.

There is a seperate group re windows update, also MS provides free email support for important updates.
