Microsoft is aware of the need for customers to be able to restore files backed up by Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (specifically .BKF files created by ntbackup.exe) to Windows Vista and Windows 7. A free tool is available
here to restore .BKF files using Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The ability to restore .BKF files to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be supported after the general availability of these products in November. More details will be provided
at that time.
