Valid for a while but not any more

First I must say that I know how to use computers, Windows, etc. I've already tried to solve this problem on my own and I can't. In the past when I ranted about Windows Activation I was told phone activation should always work, well I can not even get the option for phone activation.

8/24/2009 - Replaced hard drive in computer and reinstalled Windows Vista Business, Windows XP & my favorite Linux distribution. Activated Windows XP and Vista without any problems.

Approx the entire month of October I did not use Windows Vista. When I boot into Windows Vista approx 25th October I am told that I "might be the vicitim of software counterfeiting" it gives me two options 1) Buy a new cd key 2) Contact Dell for assistance neither of which option is acceptable to me.

First I have to say this is horrible. There is no documentation! Any other error message I can look up the message/code and know what it means... not for WGA errors! Also what "advantage" is this to me? I have a legit copy of Windows that was paid for that says I am a thief while the real thief is enjoying his free copy of Windows without any nagging!

Anyways, can someone tell me how I can force telephone activation? SLUI.EXE 4 DOES NOT WORK. I get the same screen that says call Dell or buy a new cd key.

Or even better how can I just 100% remove the Genuine Windows Disadvantage from my computer?

Start -> Computer -> Properties:

Windows Activation: You must activate today -> Activate Windows Now:

* Buy a new product key online
* Type a different product key
* Contact Dell to help resolve this problem (brings up the Windows Help article "Get customer support or other types of help")

Windows + R (since someone thought it was a bright idea to remove "Run" from the Vista start menu) -> SLUI.EXE 4:

Gives the same window as above, no option to do a telephone activation.

Also if I remove the network cable from my PC it still does not give a way to do a telephone activation.

Hi Andreas V.

Thanks for posting. If you are running SLUI.exe -4 and are still not getting a phone activation prompt, either your computer is already activated or you have Windows corruption. Please click start > in the search area type "cmd". At the top of the start window right click cmd.exe and select "Run as Administrator". Now in the command line window type "sfc /scannow" Let us know if this comes back with errors and if it fixed any.

Hope this helps!

In the end what happened is somehow the activation process was trying to use the OEM SLP key. Since I have an HP computer installed with a Dell disc the SLP key did not match the PC. This is very odd since for me to activate the machine originally, the key from the COA sticker had to be entered.

After entering the key from the COA sticker I was able to activate w/o a problem.

However this does not explain why I was prompted to activate windows and all the other ____. It is not acceptable to treat customers who have paid for your software in this manner.

I have exactly the same problem and after scanning for problems i have no integrity violations, i bought the laptop from sainsburys and have had this problem from the 2nd week, i refuse to call a national or premium rate number to talk to microsoft which i feel is unfair but when i first had the problem it game me the telephone activation which i did but now it has stopped giving me that option ....please help, is it because the software supplied is a beta copy?

i have even resorted to having to back up then reinstall but the problem remains after about 2-3 days.
