Problems downloading itunes on Vista

I have tried everything for this problem and no one seems to know how to fix it.

I trying to download itunes from http://www.apple.com/confirm/itunes/thankyou.html and get that "Thankyou for downloading itunes" msg. No icon appears on the desktop and no sign of itunes (or any other Apple software) when I doa systems search.

It seems to be expecting something else to happen/pop up. I have:
- downloaded Vista Service Pack 1
- turned off all antivirus software
- turned off pop-up blockers

I have also trie just simply plugging the iphone into the USB and it recognises what it is but remains saying "searching preconfigured driver folders..." (for about an hour)

Nobody at o2, Apple, Dell and Sky Broadband seem to be able to help.

Someone else suggested installing Firefox but thata has a similar problem (ie no error msg as such but just a 'thanks for downloading' and nothing appeargin anywhere.

I've trawled the internet and forums for days now and no joy. PLEASE....does anyone have any idea??

Hello lukeanderton,

Well, McAfee is notorious for not getting along well with Windows Defender but there is no way to know for sure if this what is causing our problem.  Here is a link to a sticky post in our Security and Privacy forum with more information about McAfee and Windows Defender:

You might want to read through it.  AVG is less problematic but watch out for the Toolbar that it tries to install.  We haven’t tried having you do a “clean boot” and try the install yet so let’s give that a try.  Here is a link to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that explains the Clean Boot procedure:

Give this a try and let us know if it works.

Thanks,

Jack
