Windows update SP2 Vista fails with 0x800F081F

After a severe HD crash, I recovered a backed up image of Vista to my HP laptop.
First not having Intel SRT blocked Windows Update. That hurdle has been taken.
A number of patches have been installed.
Now I am stuck when trying to install SP2.
It repeatedly get the 0x800F081F error in the WindowsUpdate.log

I have already run SUR, and it returns the following log:

I checked for this file, and it is present on the disk, also on the crashed disk.

Problem is that the reason for making the backup at that moment was also update problems.
My recover partition (on the same disk) is also corrupted by the crash, and I don't have a good image of the recover partition.

Can you help me ?
thanks

Jos

Hi Smittychat,

Thanks for the fast response.

The first update is not installed as far as I can see, but I do have a 32 bit OS, and the update seems to be 64-bit. I have difficulty finding the correct 32-bit variation for this one.

I've tried a manual download + install of the SP, but that failed after 40+ minutes.

I paste some stuff from the CBS.log, at the moment things go wrong:

I hope you can make some sense of it. It occurs to me that the manifest reported here isn't the same as in the SUR.

Unplug all peripherals, speakers, printer, etc.... If you have a phone docked, undock it.

Uninstall your anti-virus software temporarily

Run this MSFixit in Default then Aggressive Mode

Hi Smittychat,

Thanks for helping. I've tried this one as well.

Done several runs of fixit, with and witout agressive mode, but still the same failure, redirecting to LinkId = 122602.

If you need more specific logs, please tell me...

On the other hand, do you expect this can be recovered anyway ?

Or should I order a recovery disk for a couple of euro's and do a clean re-install ?

Upgrade to Win7 ? Could that be an option for an OEM Vista license ? What would it cost me ?

My laptop is 5 years old.

I'd recover the system.

You might try doing a repair using Windows.old folder

How to restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you install Windows Vista

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933168

Otherwise, if you purchase discs through the computer manufacturer's site they are minimal in cost.  $16-$20 USD.

If you upgrade to Windows 7, the price would vary between versions.

You might check eBay.  Be sure to read Seller Reviews
